I'm used to pottery and ceramic plates being thick and heavy. These are not, which I don't mind. They're easier to handle since they are relatively light for their size. However, the bottoms have ridges which are not glazed, so they're rough and course, rather than smooth to the touch. Time will tell if stacking them will cause the plate underneath to be scratched.
I was having dinner at a friend's home, and fell in love with this pattern. The first place I looked for it was Overstock, and thrilled when they came in. The dinner plates and salad plates (I ordered 8 of each) are full of fabulous fall colors; rimmed in black, with just enough red accent to make a stunning table setting. The North African look of the dishes can be played up for a Tandoori dinner, or played down for a traditional Thanksgiving. They are sturdy and hold up well to multiple dishwasher cleanings, unlike some of my other dishware. I have not put them in the microwave because they are hand made and won't take the chance of ruining them.
The design and pattern of these plates were good. They are much like the ones I saw (and didn't buy) while I was in Tunisia. I have been searching for Tunisian plates every since my visit. I thought these would be perfect. However, the glazing is not perfect. The overglaze has tiny bubbles in the surface. These bubbles burst in the final stage of firing, making the surface rough. I kept the plates and just used them for Thanksgiving - htey looked great. But I know they will not last long due to the fact that the surface is imperfectly glazed, allowing moisture to get into the clay body of the plate.
I had ordered bowls at an eariler time and just recently started using them. When my husband saw them he mentioned how good looking they were, and was is possible to order more dishes in that pattern. They arrived in good condition and we are both enjoying using them. thank you once again Overstock.Com.
