Story Behind the Art:
All these oriental alabaster products are made by the same workshop for the past 12 years. The artisan is Mr. Mahmoud Abdel Nabi, who was born in the Egyptian countryside, but who moved to Cairo and grew up there from an early age. Mr. Abdel Nabi has worked in the field of marble, alabaster and stone for most of his adult life. Oriental alabaster is a translucent marble found only in Egypt. It is thought the ancient city of Alabastros, gave alabaster its moniker. The ancient Pharaohs utilized this marble in many aspects of their daily lives and religious ceremonies. Its use in Egypt has been carried down to the present day. Of course, giving work to people is called 'opening homes', here in Egypt. To be able to help people by giving them work, is not only a responsibility, but a pleasure.

Pretty? Yes. Practical? No.
At first glance, these are really lovely. The problem is that the bottom of the inner surface is curved, not flat, so it's very difficult to keep your candles upright. Also, because of the width, the candles melt a lot faster and don't last nearly as long. (My 15-hour votives last about 3-4 hours in these.) These holders might be well-suited for tea lights, but definitely not for votive candles.

Very beautiful votives. They are just as they appear in the picture translucent with a candle at night. We've already used them almost every night.

Pretty cool
I originally saw these advertised elsewhere but found they were sold out when I tried to place my order. Since I thought these would be a neat Valentines day gift for my wife, I googled around and found them here. Although these were more expensive, I believe these were larger in size than others I've seen. I believe these are just about the right size - like a good thick coffee mug. The Egyptian newspaper which was packed in the box was COOL! They were also individually wrapped in bubble wrap, so kudos for a nice packaging job. Each votive is very different. One is very stripy (?) which looks really nice in the daylight with no candle, but now seems rather plain compared to the more cobbled look of the others. All in all, I think the wide variation is a feature and not a bug. :-) These things do look awesome when lit up and I'm very pleased with my purchase. There was no care instructions included. I've been led to believe that alabaster can become more opaque with heat, so I'm slightly concerned about burning candles as opposed to battery powered lights. It would be nice to know if there is some special handling that I need to be aware of. But for now, we'll just burn away and hope for the best!

- Please tell us about the quality of the product. These were chunky (thick, heavy) and seemed to be of good quality. One of the four seemed to have some patching/putty in a few spots which is not translucent. I think this can be expected in a product made of stone/mineral.
- How accurate was the sizing? I didn't measure them, but I was pleased with the size. I was thinking they'd actually be much smaller. My daughter thought they were drinking glasses. :-)
