Story Behind the Art:

The richly colored fabrics which are generally woven in traditional paisley patterns were traditionally woven on the handlooms in the Indian states which took to it during the years when Mahatma Gandhi encouraged Indians to do 'their own' weaving. Technology has blended with tradition, and now these shawls are woven on machines in small shops to keep the cost down. Even these so-called machine made fabrics are heavily dependent on human intervention literally by the minute. This home-industry is the life line of the Indian worker who is known to prefer 'his own' freedom to being 'tied down' by the strings of employment in big factories. Many of the designs are replicated from ancient patterns from the 15th Century, which were based on the flora and fauna of the region.
