    Story Behind the Art:
    Diego Canil is a Maya woodcarver. At 10, he left school to help his father work in the fields. Eventually he began selling wooden masks, then learned to carve and paint them, while still helping his father. A devout Catholic, he then began carving images of saints. Today, he has taught his art to 6 people, and has been able to put his children through school. Diego is also an accomplished folk dancer.
