Story Behind the Art:
Hamadan, Iran is one of civilization's most ancient urban centers, where 1500 villages specialize in their own designs, creating over 3000 variations. Although each village or group of villages has its own distinctive designs, they all have certain characteristics in common. This particular rug was made in the village of Malayer and was crafted by the Sultani family. In this family, there are three generations of family weaving the rugs; the grandmother, mother and daughters all help in the rug production. The village women, aside from cooking and cleaning, spend approximately four hours a day weaving the rugs while the children are at school. When the children return home from school, they help as well.
