Story Behind the Art:
Indigenous is working to elevate the reputation of weaving as an art form in order to help revitalize the tradition and culture of weaving in Guatemala. They have worked to provide new and upgraded looms for weavers in the highlands allowing them to make premium quality woven fabric. The weavers they work with are located throughout the highlands of Guatemala, from Nahuala to Huehuetenango (northwestern highlands of Guatemala). A typical weaver with our group earnings are 112-percent higher than a typical weaver in the highlands of Guatemala. Indigenous weavers are paid by the yard instead of by the day or hour, which enables them to go about their daily duties within their own community and family such as attending to crops or livestock, and empowers the weaver to be in control of their own priorities. This in turn gives the weavers self esteem and pride in their craftsmanship.
