Story Behind the Art:
An ashiko is a kind of drum shaped like a truncated cone and meant to be played with bare hands. The ashiko drum is played throughout sub-Saharan Africa and the Americas. In eastern Cuba, it is known as boku and is played during carnivals and street parades called Comparsas. Some consider the ashiko to be male and the djembe female. The artisans of Bali, Indonesia are skilled masters in the art of carving wood and ceramics. Both are unique talents that have been handed down through the generations. Making handicrafts, hand-carved furniture, musical instruments and home decor is the livelihood of the Indonesian artisans and they take incredible pride in their work. They're perfectionists at what they do and love to share their gift for all to enjoy! The artisans that have created these instruments are specialists in both design detail and musicality. Each one is hand crafted with intricate designs and patterns to give each instrument a unique look and feel.
