Story Behind the Art:

'Our family has been weaving Zapotec-style rugs for many generations. We purchase wool from a farmer nearby and dye it with natural dyes collected from native plants. We are all involved in every aspect of weaving. Not one of us has ever hesitated to become a rug weaver. We have all grown up watching our parents and grandparents weave, and because it is an enjoyable process, we have followed in our parents' footsteps as adults. Our children are learning in school that they have opportunities to try other types of work as well, but we would not be surprised if they eventually decide to become rug makers. Our rugs carry the lines and colors of our native land. In keeping with the Zapotec tradition of carefully selecting each family member's name, we actually baptize each of our rug designs as if the rugs were born and needed a name with which to be identified.'

  • Just a Word of Caution

I'd recommend this to a friend with one reservation: The dominant color appears on my monitor as "fire engine red" which is what I wanted. The color is, instead, closer to a burgandy/wine. Fortunately, I had another place in the house where these colors work okay. I love Zapotec weavings; have watched artisans in Mexico looming these by hand, using natural dyes. If purchasing online in the future, I would speak to a representative and ask for color clarification before ordering. Note: If I had needed to return this rug, Overstock would have made it hassle-free, I'm sure, since they have been great about that in other instances.

  • This rug is beautiful!!!!!!

This rug is beautiful. We live on the East Coast, but my husband is from the West; our home is decorated Southwestern. We had a small party last night and everyone commented on the rug.

  • Gorgeous rug

Almost too pretty for my bedroom floor. My dogs love to lay on it and well, they can. It's for living and I gently vacuum so I can enjoy as well! I purposefully purchased this handmade rug by this family after reading about them and have decided NOVICA is where I like my merchandise to originate. These are beautifully hand wrought items. This rug is no exception and I feel good about supporting their efforts.

  • Bright colors & Good Quality

Nice bright colored rug with a good quality. The rug is heavy in weight and has a tight weave. Requires the use of rug padding to keep it from slipping. We purchased two as small rugs for either side of the bed and have had no problems with them.

Questions & Answers

Get your product questions answered right here.
  • Why do these Mexican rugs specify "dry clean only"? (All of my oriental rugs, also made of wool and natural dyes, require specialized cold water washings.) Is it on account of the danger of shrinkage or of color bleeding? Something else? Could a rug that requires dry cleaning possibly be used in the kitchen where it would occasionally encounter grease, food stains, and soapy water?

    • Thank you for your interest. I would think because of the possibility of color bleeding. And though you could use a rug that requires dry cleaning in the kitchen area, be prepared for the need of frequent cleaning of some kind. Please feel free to contact us again with any further questions.
