Story Behind the Art:
The weavers who make these pieces are located throughout the highlands of Guatemala, from Nahuala to Huehuetenango (northwestern highlands of Guatemala). A typical weaver with this group earns112-percent more than a typical weaver in the highlands of Guatemala. They weavers are paid by the yard instead of by the day or hour, which enables them to go about their daily duties within their own community and family such as attending to crops or livestock, and empowers the weaver to be in control of their own priorities. This in turn gives the weavers self esteem and pride in their craftsmanship.
