Long Life Scholars Table (China)

Just received this desk today. I must say that it's actually better in person than in the display picture. However, there are some differences (good ones) from the one in the product image. The differences are in a deeper color, the symbols on the doors are not distressed looking as in the image (something I'm rather glad about, actually- makes them look more normal without it), however one of them appears to be not finished completely. Also, the brass accents on the wings of the desk are a sweeping butterfly engraving instead of just plain brass, which I quite like. Please note, also, that the brass accents are only on the side of the desk that has the doors (and thus facing the person using it), and not on the other side. I did not have the exact same door problem as the other reviewer for this item. One of my doors came pushed in, seemingly secured by a strategically wedged piece of padding, and the other one had come loose. It was easy enough to push back into place without damaging the piece. Also, although the doorway to the inside of desk is not huge, it is quite sufficiently large enough I think. The grain on the wood of the piece I received is quite nice. It is completely laquered/varnished save for the bottom of the feet and the underside of the bottom shelf. The feet are still smooth enough, however. It came well packaged- I've found no scratches save for one minor mark to the inside of the desk that was probably caused by the one loose door. Buyers should note, however, that this desk is NOT CHINESE OR JAPANESE IN STYLE. It is Korean. THIS IS GOOD for a few reasons: 1) Korean furniture is often more decorative (i.e. the brass fixtures, especially butterflies) than Japanese furniture (which is generally more plain), and more subdued/tasteful than over-done chinese pieces that have a lot going on on them. 2) Korean furniture tends to have more character while being very functional. 3) Korean furniture is generally made to be more easily moved around, either for moving house or rearranging rooms, compared to other asian furniture. This IS a piece made in China, though. It's a chinese reproduction (and from what I can tell, an exact reproduction for all purposes), of korean made scholar's desks currently on sale on the internet. The difference is that overstock doesn't charge you the shipping they do. This is a very good piece, and I'm quite pleased with it. I'm giving it 4 stars, however, because it seems the price has gone down $5 since I ordered it a couple days ago and that's just not cool, haha.
