Beautiful yet stinky
from Oakland, CA,  Apr 19, 2011

Here's the deal. I obsessed over this ottoman in various Apartment Therapy photos. It seems that everyone is using these to accent their small spaces and they make the perfect foot stool and quick seat for guests. I picked the mustard yellow one, which is exactly as pictured. It's a sturdy leather, beautifully sewn, fully stuffed, with a zipper along the bottom. I opened it up and the contents were clean and unscented. However, I have had it almost a month now and I cannot stand the scent of it. Let me be clear, I LOVE the smell of leather, but this is like some sort of improperly cured leather. It smells, to put it nicely, like festering goat urine. I have a 700 sq. ft. apartment with windows on three sides. I have left the windows open every day and the scent still wafts over to me every time I return home. I wrote to Overstock and they contacted the dealer who told them that: "I have found that the leather is 100% genuine; the smell is of leather as for the way it was hand processed. It the odor will dissipate over time." Boy, I sure hope so. Other than the smell, I can't complain, but the smell alone will make you gag. I've Googled "Morrocan ottoman smell" and have found a lot of similar hits. I've been told by a friend that it gets better, but when?!
