Your description did not report that the umbrella is not adjustable with a crank nor that it needs a special stand. The only way I can open it is to stand on top of the table and stick the pin in a small hole at the very top of the pole (I have to have my son come to my house and do this for me). I don't believe these beautiful umbrellas (I purchased 2 of them) will withstand the harsh Texas sun, rain and wind. They really should have an umbrella stand that the pole can screw into as the pole has the markings for a screw type stand. I am almost 80 years old so feel I must return the one umbrella that I did not open and get an umbrella with a crank adjustment and one that is much more durable.
