From the mid 19th-century onward, Mahal rugs were exclusively made for the European market. They often favored bold floral designs with spacious patterns. Rugs from this period were exclusively made with pure, natural dyes. Dark red, blue, soft green, gold, and ivory are the typical colors. Warps, foundation and wefts are cotton, and the pile is wool. The wool of the Mahal rugs is hand-spun usually from the weaver's own sheep. The rugs are woven using asymmetrical Turkish knots to tie each loop one by one. Using wide and bold borders, Mahal rugs had designs based on small repeating floral patterns as well as all-over large scale lattice vine patterns. Foreign companies as well as local merchants adopted a similar system, causing Mahal carpets to become carpets of the highest decorative value. Mahals have great value in any condition.

Beautiful Rug
The rug was as described, it is primarily two shades of blue with some earth and red tone accents. It is of good quality and seems to be made well, so far only very slight shedding. I am very happy with this purchase and would recommend this rug.

Beware Not The Colors in the Description At All
I was very apprehensive in ordering a rug off Overstock - due to color. I should have listened to my instincts. Eventhough the quality of the rug was very good, the color did not even come close to the colors I have in my living room. Now it is going to cost me close to $$$ in return shipping and I will need someone to help load it into my vehicle because I cannot even lift it! I have another rug coming tomorrow, which I ordered at the same time I ordered this one - I only pray it matches the colors in the photo and the description! Otherwise I have certainly learned my lesson. Even the customer service agent said it is not a good idea to order large area rugs - because you cannot tell the true colors.
