Story Behind the Art:
This rug was created in the Varanasi region of India, in the Bhadohi village. These rugs are made by Mahmood and his family. They are hand-tufted in their own homes, and everyone in the family helps out in the process of rug making, from his wife, Shakiba, to the youngest daughter, Jamila. They process the wool in their home, prior to making the rugs. All washing, spinning and dyeing of the wool are done in their home. The weaving technique is hand-tufted, which is a rug making process where weavers insert yarn into the rug backing with a hand held tufting gun to push and pull the threads through a pre-woven grid foundation. The pattern is stenciled onto the primary backing material and once the tufting is complete, an additional backing is attached to protect the stitches.

Color was way off online photo and even the little insert provided by the rug co., which shows deep red and burgundies against dark background. The rug is actually very soft, mauve, salmon, pale vibes. Luckily for me it still worked in the room selected, though other rugs in dark red colors had to be taken out. Do not get if you want dark red, traditional rug color. Do get if you want muted colors, fair traded and exceptionally soft. This rug is a joy, adding warmth and softness to our room and slate floor Cushy and beautiful. Love it.
