Product Features
Story Behind the Art
SMOLArt is a group of artists who live in the rural village of Tabaka, Kenya. Soapstone is mined from great pits in the area surrounding Kiisi, Kenya. The mined stone is then delivered to carvers who carve sculptures from the natural stone the color of which ranges from cream to pink to brown to yellow to black with a marbling in each of them. Once carved, the craftspeople smooth rough edges with sandpaper dipped in water and polish the piece to a high gloss or paint African motifs in brilliant colors with etched accents. All of the products are completely handmade. The tools consist of household items, such as screwdrivers, hand drills and switchblades.
What is Worldstock?
The handcrafted touch of artisan skill creates variations in color, size and design. If buying two of the same item, slight differences should be expected. Note: Color discrepancies may occur between this product and your computer screen.

Love it!
I was visiting a friend who had one of these and knew I needed to find one. It is a box to hold jewelry or anything you wish it to hold. In order to open it, you need to take (pull) Kenya off the map. I love it.

Pleasantly Suprised
What I really liked about the product was the weight. It isn't flimsy, feels durable and I like the coloring of the soapstone. It's a cute little keepsake. The only thing I would add to it would be a nice piece of cloth so the inside would compliment the outerworks. Other than that I'm satisfied

Looked at this when I was in Kenya
We have traveled to Kenya and while shopping at the open market we almost bought this exact product. I held it in my hand and then regretted later not buying. So I was so happy to see this product offered on Overstock. What a great deal and so nice when we would likek to buy products but can not get there. I love the money being shared with the people of Kenya.
