Handmade Butterfly Lady Tapestry (China)

This Batik tapestry is hand-painted using the ancient 'La Ran' technique. Known contemporarily as the 'wax dye' technique, this ancient art form hails from the southwestern regions of China. It involves applying wax on hand-woven fabric to prevent certain areas from absorbing the dye. As the process is repeated, an intricate pattern begins to emerge.

The Butterfly Lady tapestry features a young girl with exotic traditional clothing and playing with whimsical butterflies. The piece is double-backed for additional strength and stability and features a loop on top for the insertion of a hanging rod.

The Story Behind the Art

These beautiful tapestries are one of the traditional art pieces created by the Chinese minority known as Miao people who live in the Southwestern part of China. The patterns and methodology used in creating these tapestries has been passed down from generation to generation.
