I've looked at this item a few times and always wanted to buy it but was always hesitant because of the first review which was negative. I was concerned about the review that it looked like tissue glued on stone and it was not carved or handpainted. The Overstock team responded that they had checked and it was handpainted. I decided the sleeping Buddha just looked too beautiful to pass up. I kept looking at the picture and it sure looked to me like a carved Buddha resting inside of a box. It looked 3-D to me so I was thinking this would be something exceptionally nice and unusual. The Sleeping Buddha stone is right in front of me and I can say it is not what I expected at all. It is a flat stone with a picture on it. That picture does not look handpainted. In fact, I am sure this is a decoupage. The picture was glued to the stone. I can see the wide brush strokes of the lacquer that was applied. The stone is gray and the edges are painted black as are the corners--as if to create shadows. It looks like a faint line of black was painted on top over the grapics. I assume that was done to create more shadows. The picture "melts" into the black. The slate is flate. There is no carved Buddha nor is there any depth. I held the stone in the same angle as the picture and I can see there is an illusion of depth and 3-D but that is only an illusion. The two black knobs at the bottom are obviously from the nice metal easel-style stand that is included. There is also a hook on the back so you can hang the stone on the wall. To me this is clearly decoupage with some edges painted black. I do think the picture and description are unintentionally misleading. This stone was $$$. I also ordered a stone Buddha figure with this order and it was only $$$ and looks so much more impressive. Three edges of this stone are square. The top is more jagged like a piece of slate in its natural state. I do think this stone was nicely designed and looks attractive but it is not handpainted except the edges. Look closely at the details on the wall behind Buddha and it's clear they are not handpainted. It's a picture. Overstock might want to change the picture and description to get a better idea of what the stone actually is. I'm probably going to return this item since it is not what I expected and I would rather have a figurine.

Don't want to be unkind, but this looks carved and/or painted here and in person looks like a piece of tissue paper picture glued on a piece of slate. Not at all what I thought I was getting.
