Story Behind the Art:
This colorful, handcrafted, 100-percent cotton shopper is made by a group of artisans who specialize in hand, wood block printed fabric in Northwestern India. Ramlal Khatri a very talented artisan who has won prestigious national awards for his wood-block printing is the head of the group. Block printing is a traditional art where hand-carved wood blocks are used to create patterns on fabric. He follows an environmentally-friendly process and uses 100-percent natural dyes. Ramlal and his group came up with the idea to make more functional products using this age-old technique and traditional art, and the eco-shopper was born. Fair trade has helped Ramlal and his group reach a market, allowing them to live off of their art. This has kept the traditional wood-block printing knowledge alive. In addition, the group now has sustainable income, which they use to develop their community.
