In the Hamadan area, 1500 villages specialize in their own designs, creating over 3000 variations. The rug designs are similar in layout, but each design has special characteristics that distinguish it. This is a major industry in the city of Hamadan and the only source of income for thousands of families. Hamadan rugs are constructed to last a long time. The rug owes its durability to the luxurious looking, yet rugged pile, hand-spun from the wool of hardy sheep raised at high mountain altitudes and cool climate. This intricate rug boasts rich colors in red, ivory, green, light blue, and camel.
