The Story Behind the Product
Akwasi Agyeman was born into a family of 12 children in the small tribal village of Foase in Ghana, West Africa. The family was so poor that Akwasi was limited to only a 7th grade education in order to help his father farm to feed the family. In 7th grade his teacher asked each of them to make something for art class. Akwasi produced a Fertility Doll as his project and amazed the teacher. Akwasi knew then he had a natural talent for carving. After ten years and with the help of Fair trade Akwasi is now married with two handsome boys. He employs 15 people and has built a small three bedroom house for his family. Akwasi and his fellow artisans hope you enjoy their work.

I purchased this item as a Holiday gift for a close friend from Ghana and I must admit I was a little disappointed when I received them. They are obviously handmade, and relatively well crafted however, there was absolutely no symmetry between the two pieces. They were two completely different sized articles in every way...the base, the carved word and the carved book that stands behind the word. Other than the color and general look there was no way to tell they were a pair. The wood was authentic, and again, the quality quite on par but I almost felt uncomfortable presenting them as a gift because of the flaws. In addition, I must note that they would probably be more useful as decorative pieces than bookends considering they were very light and probably would not be able to hold large books in place.
When I first ordered this piece, I was disappointed in the workmanship. One bookend was stained a darker brown than the other, and one was wider than the other. I requested an exchange and Overstock customer service was great. In no time I was shipped another set. The second set is beautiful--I'm quite satisfied with the purchase.
Would you recommend this to a friend? Yes

Although it is a nice looking pair of book ends the weight is much lighter on one of the pieces. They are obviously not of the same quality. I guess I got the pair that wasn't equal in weight. My books still fell. You are taking a chance on this one I guess.
i'm happy with my new wooden bookends. The finish is a dark oil stain.i've added gold trim with a paint pen to make them a bit less rustic, and black paint and walut stain evened out the edges that hadn't takenthe original stain very well. The price was good,I thought, for so handsome and sturdy a handmadeprduc.I would 'dhappily recommend them to other Overstock customers .
Did the color match the color displayed onsite? i don't remember the illustration, frankly.
Please tell us about the quality of the product. My new wooden bookends are sturdy and well made,i think. They're very large, for bookends; tall enough for quite large volumes.
These are exactly what they're supposed to be which are bookends. The hold up books and actually have a nice poupouri (sp?) smell when they come out of the box. The two are not complete matches but are obviously a pair. I think that this is done to give them a handmade look.
The only thing that I would criticize them for is that they could be slightly heavier but it hasn't caused any problems with them holding up the books in a week's time. I'm neither a bookend expert nor an art expert, but these do the job and look nice. I'm not sure what another set costing $50 or more would do that these don't.
