The "Gye Nyame" bookends were absolutely gorgeous and worth every bit of the $30 I paid for them! I ordered them on a Wednesday and got the box on a Saturday! Great and reliable service!!

Trusting in God, as directed
from New York,  Jan 9, 2008

I purchased this item as a Holiday gift for a close friend from Ghana and I must admit I was a little disappointed when I received them. They are obviously handmade, and relatively well crafted however, there was absolutely no symmetry between the two pieces. They were two completely different sized articles in every way...the base, the carved word and the carved book that stands behind the word. Other than the color and general look there was no way to tell they were a pair. The wood was authentic, and again, the quality quite on par but I almost felt uncomfortable presenting them as a gift because of the flaws. In addition, I must note that they would probably be more useful as decorative pieces than bookends considering they were very light and probably would not be able to hold large books in place.

Nice Piece
from Long Beach, California,  May 27, 2007

When I first ordered this piece, I was disappointed in the workmanship. One bookend was stained a darker brown than the other, and one was wider than the other. I requested an exchange and Overstock customer service was great. In no time I was shipped another set. The second set is beautiful--I'm quite satisfied with the purchase.

Not what I expected
 from TN,  Apr 18, 2007

Although it is a nice looking pair of book ends the weight is much lighter on one of the pieces. They are obviously not of the same quality. I guess I got the pair that wasn't equal in weight. My books still fell. You are taking a chance on this one I guess.

Just love these! They look much better in person than on the screen, and they're nice and heavy.

hAVE BIG BOOKS TO PROP UP?
from Western Uregon,  Nov 4, 2011

i'm happy with my new wooden bookends. The finish is a dark oil stain.i've added gold trim with a paint pen to make them a bit less rustic, and black paint and walut stain evened out the edges that hadn't takenthe original stain very well. The price was good,I thought, for so handsome and sturdy a handmadeprduc.I would 'dhappily recommend them to other Overstock customers .

  • Did the color match the color displayed onsite? i don't remember the illustration, frankly.
  • Please tell us about the quality of the product. My new wooden bookends are sturdy and well made,i think. They're very large, for bookends; tall enough for quite large volumes.
  • How accurate was the sizing? I don't recall.

It's bookends
from Long Island, NY,  Nov 23, 2010

These are exactly what they're supposed to be which are bookends. The hold up books and actually have a nice poupouri (sp?) smell when they come out of the box. The two are not complete matches but are obviously a pair. I think that this is done to give them a handmade look. The only thing that I would criticize them for is that they could be slightly heavier but it hasn't caused any problems with them holding up the books in a week's time. I'm neither a bookend expert nor an art expert, but these do the job and look nice. I'm not sure what another set costing $50 or more would do that these don't.

I'm very pleased. They are beautiful, full of African culture, reasonably priced, and fully functional. They give my home a royal touch and I've already shared them and Overstock.com with others.

I think they are great!
from Troy, MI,  Jan 14, 2008

I really love them. They look just as good in person as they do online. The workmanship is great, however, they are not absolutely identical. Typically I'm fairly peticular about such things, but in this instance I think it adds character and only emphasizes the fact that it is hand made.

Unique
from Jacksonville, FL,  Dec 26, 2007

I gave these as a Christmas gift to my brother and he seemed to like them. I thought they were great and very unique! It's difficult to find things that are completely hand crafted and that's definitely what gives these bookends their character.

These bookends add to the international feel of my home. They are also an interesting conversational piece. I am considering purchasing another pair for a present. I like the reminder, if I am anxious about anything, to fear only God.

Gye Nyame Bookends
from Los Angeles, CA,  May 3, 2007

Just what it looks like online. The two pieces are not exactly identical which is okay since they were handmade. So if you're expecting that, you might be disappointed. I think they're a great piece to add to any collection. The wood stain leaves a little odor that goes away in a few days so just be mindful of that too.
