Story Behind the Art:
Chucam is a small farming village located in the Department (county) of El Quiche, Guatemala. The community is located about 3 miles from the town of Chichicastenango, but the road to town is not paved and access to the village becomes difficult during the rainy season. The families of the community are very poor, but the women know the ancestral art of weaving and use it as a supplemental income to provide a better life for their children. In 2001, eight Chucam families banded together to form a weaving cooperative to make beautiful patchwork quilts and other embroidered textiles. Their incomes have doubled if not tripled, and dozens of additional Chucam families have become involved. More importantly, the men don't have to leave for months at a time looking for work in the sugar cane fields, and many more of the villager's children are able to stay in school.
The handcrafted nature of this product will produce minor differences in design and sizing. Subtle variations will occur from piece to piece, adding to its unique qualities. Measurements may vary slightly.

I got this because my daughter brought home a similar bag from Guatemala that I coveted. This one is not quite as nicely shaped, squared off at the top compared to her curved top that nicely echoes the embroidered section. The fabrics on mine are not as detailed. This one actually comes via Overstock from a business that sells handcrafts from around the world to support artisans who otherwise wouldn't make a living, so if I get another it will be directly from there. They also sell lots of other interesting handcrafted textiles. The lining is awful, flimsy and slippery, without any pockets, the same as my daughter's bag has. I had to cut her bag's shredded lining out and replace it within a few months to add a sturdier one with pockets, so use a purse organizer or something to keep things from sliding around, pooling at the bottom and wearing through the fabric.Read More
I have been buying these bags from a vendor at a fair near where I live for the past several years. But since the festival isn't happening until the spring and I needed a new purse, I purchased this one through Overstock this time. It's my first purchase from this company. They were curtious over the phone, and I received my purse on time. The purse is as advertised and matches the type that I usually buy at the fair. I love my purse!Read More
This bag is as pictured, very pretty, and roomier than I expected. I gave it 4 stars and not 5 because the strap is only attached on one side. A knot holds well, but I will probably end up purchasing and attaching some kind of clasp or buckle.Read More
