Story Behind the Art:
Chucam is a small farming village located in the Department (County) of El Quiche, Guatemala. The community is located about 3 miles away from the town of Chichicastenango, but the road to town is not paved and access to the village becomes difficult during the rainy season. The families of the community are very poor, but the women know the ancestral art of weaving and use it as a supplemental income to provide a better life for their children. In 2001, eight Chucam families banded together to form a weaving cooperative to make beautiful patchwork quilts and other embroidered textiles. Their incomes have doubled if not tripled, and dozens of additional Chucam families have become involved. More importantly, the men don't have to leave for months at a time looking for work in the sugar cane fields and many more of the village's children are able to stay in school.
The handcrafted touch of artisan skill creates variations in color, size and design. If buying two of the same item, slight differences should be expected. Note: Color discrepancies may occur between this product and your computer screen.

These looked too much like something one might have bought in a hippie head shop in the 70's, and the colors didn't work for me, so I sent them back. Overstock makes it easy, but beware: if you use the shipping label they provide, they charge you for the return postage.Read More
These pieces from Guatemala are beautiful. They are well made and stunning to look at.Read More
A very beautiful handmade quilted pillow. The screen color indicated more purple in the blue design, but since these are handmade that's a quibble. The zipper is sensitive and split once, however it's a self repairing zipper so with some effort it was fixed.Read More
The most comfortable throw pillows around and I've tried many. The removable cover sold me. Quite a conversation piece, too.Read More
The pillow cases are beautiful but don't match. I ordered 2 of them. They both have the rose print but are different. But that is ok, I still love them. So pretty.Read More
These pillow covers from Guatemala are really beautiful. I got the red/earth tones, and the colors are very rich. They are very well-made. Even though the covers are 18", I got the 20" down pillow inserts from Overstock to put in them, and they work perfectly. 18" inserts would be too small and make the pillow flatten easily.Read More
The quality of this product is perfectly in order, as described. My only complaint and perhaps a large one would be that the pillow I ordered came nothing like what it appears like online. I appreciate that this is not a mass-made item, but I was hoping a little more similarity between the one online and the one I ordered. I ordered the blue one with the floral pattern. Online it appears to have large intricate flowers with leaves. More simplistic circular flowers appear on the one I received. Also the colouring was way off. Mine is clearly purple background with dark, dark blue and black flowers. I kept the pillow, but I feel frustrated that it is so different from the example online.Read More
Having just adopted a child from Guatemala, we wanted something in our living room that we could look at and share with our daughter the lovely pillow cases we purchased from her birth country. They are beautiful and we would like to recommend them to others. The zipper did, however, break when placing it inside the first pillow case, but I opted to take it to a seamstress rather than send it back.Read More
I was looking for a cotton, cushion cover, in a similar color for quite a long time, I was very happy when I found this, because it was very close to the color I was looking for. I also liked the fact that the design was somewhat geometric, rather than flowery. This pillow has colors ranging from light yellowish green, to darker, deeper greens. I think I will be able to wash this by hand and iron it, when and if needed, and it will keep its shape. The material, by the way is not overly stiff or overly flimsy, just the right kind which makes this pillow the kind that you can hug and lie down on. I really don't like cushions or cushion covers which are decorated with beads or other hard bits. I like to be able to crush my cushion and not be stabbed by something sharp. I am very happy with the lovely workmanship and great feel of the material, and recommend it if you have similar taste to mine.Read More
