The cultivation of Egyptian cotton is done on small plots, and by hand. Contrary to US cotton, there is almost nothing mechanized in the growing and harvesting of Egyptian cotton. It is planted, irrigated, weeded, sprayed and fertilized by hand. All of these steps are done with loving care and very focused labor. Cotton is normally weeded at least 4 -5 times by a 'fas' which is the same hoe which has been used for over 5,000 years.
