Story Behind the Art:
The visual quality of molas has given Kuna Women a reputation worldwide for outstanding creative power and complete mastery of textile art. The word mola is the name given by the Kuna women to the multicolored panels that they wear on their traditional blouses. Molas are composed of several layers of cloth worked in a technique called reverse applique which is an embroidery technique that is used as well in quilting. It involves layering fabrics, and then cutting away at the top layers to reveal the ones underneath in unique patterns. This gives the mola dimension, color, shape and texture. Decorative additions of embroidery and patchwork do contribute to the overall effect. Mola designs can vary from traditional to modern elements such as abstract geometrical designs and motifs from nature and Kuna legends. Molas look beautiful as framed wall decor, make unique gifts and wonderful conversation pieces.
The handcrafted touch of artisan skill creates variations in color, size and design. If buying two of the same item, slight differences should be expected. Note: Color discrepancies may occur between this product and your computer screen.
