Story Behind the Art:
The women at Cocoki cooperative in Rwanda proudly design and produce these pieces from traditional Dutch wax cloth using nothing but their own creativity and foot-powered sewing machines. TheCooperative de Couture de Kicukiro (known as Cocoki), is a sewing cooperative of more than 40 women in Kigali, Rwanda. The women at Cocoki are innovative, entrepreneurial and experts at their craft. The Cocoki facility has no electricity or running water, but the women carry on with humor and determination. Before being able to provide their product to the world at large, more than 90-percent of the women supported an average family of six on $0.50 per day. They now earn four times that much.
