Story Behind the Art:
Artisans Orlando Paez and Mari Del Pilar Martinez create these beautiful lamps out of Raquira, Colombia. Guadua is a strong and resistant natural material from Quindio. The Guadua must be cut once a month before five in the morning in the waning moon, because that's when the water inside goes to the bottom and it's at its driest point. The fabric has been chosen for its flexibility, durability, non-shrinkage and easiness to wash, as well as the pyramid shape being a symbol for universal energy. There are 30 total artisans that help create these lamps.
With the money collected from the Worldstock orders Orlando has been able to send his daughter to school to continue her studies as well as English courses.
The handcrafted touch of artisan skill creates variations in color, size and design. If buying two of the same item, slight differences should be expected. Note: Color discrepancies may occur between this product and your computer screen.

This lamp is very unique, a great conversation piece, looks very stylish and nicely lights the area it is in. I have received alot of compliments from everyone on this. Although great looking, there are a few things that I did not like about the product. When you first open the box, there is a very very strong smoky smell coming from the wood. This starts to diminish after a few weeks, but is not very pleasant. Also, be careful putting it together as the stain used on the wood can easily rub off onto the fabric shade. The first lamp I received had a bad electrical cord, but Overstock was just great and took it right back, the second one worked just fine. The lamp is a little pricey, but I would definately recommend it.
I shop on Overstock.com all the time, and I must say that when I saw this lamp I was amazed by it and skeptical and the same time. I ordered it anyway because I am an artist and I love unique things. Once it arrived I fell in love with it and the craftsmanship. It was easy to put up, my husband and I put it up in no time and really the instructions were not needed, the lamp itself was explanatory. There were no smears of the wood or an odor. I would highly recommend this item to anyone who is interested in unique things.
I look for unique lamps and this one tops them all. The lighting is just perfect to offset the room.I chuckled when I saw the rudimentary "how to" instructions, but once you read them, it was easy to put together. Though i was afraid at first to stretch the wood - I can see now how strong it really is.....still be gentle but don't be afraid to stretch it a bit. This lamp is absolutely a beautiful accessory.
Overall very pleased with this lamp. Assembly directions are pretty much useless, but once you throw them away it gets much simpler. You also will want to use no more than a 40 watt bulb for the best lighting appearance.
I liked the lamp when I saw it on overstock. i bought it, and it came just 2 days later. it's a little tricky to assemble. you have to make sure that the seams of the fabric match up to the wood and the X. As a previous reviewer suggested, i purchased the Philips DuraMax bulbs, and it works perfectly. The only downside to this lamp is that i can't find a table lamp that will match or compliment it. if anyone knows of such a lamp, please let me know!
We bought 2 of these lamps to go with some sunroom wicker furniture. These lamps are eye-catching and really present a nice warm ambiance for entertaining or just relaxing. The design is unique; you need to commit to the project when assembling them and not worry about breaking the wood when stretching the fabric around the frame. It can be a bit unsettling to have to subject a new piece of furniture to stress as part of the assembly project, but this is bamboo and it seems to have an impressive amount of tensile strength; if my ham-fisted efforts didn't break it, then I think it's safe to go for it. These are probably the nicest lamps we have ever bought and kudos to overstock for expanding the market for the people who make them. Would not hesitate to recommend to others. One interesting point is that the plug incorporates a GFCI device; it makes it safer ( although it's probably not necessary on modern circuits ) but a bit bulky to plug on.
We really love these lamps; they make us want to go out of our way to sit in the room where we installed them.
The lamp has a small footprint and takes up minimal real-estate but still provides nice all around soft lighting. It was less than 10 minutes from opening the box to "let there be light".
The lamp looks exactly as it is pictured. The dimensions are within centimeters of the description, not bad for a lamp made by hand from bamboo.
No instructions where in the box, but the set-up and shade assembly was intuitive by its very design and function. A reminder of the recommended bulb wattage may have been a good thing to include.
Before ordering the lamp I had read through the many reviews, good and bad. Fully equipped with a plan to leave the lamp on the balcony overnight to air-out and a clean dust cloth I proceeded to open the box. To my delight there was no smell when I removed the lamp from the box and bag. Careful not to get stain on the floor or myself I wiped down the bamboo sections and found the cloth free of dust and stain.
Assembly took only a couple of minutes, I screwed in the bulbs, plugged in the lamp and was up and illuminated.
Perhaps the manufacturer has also been reading the feedback and corrected his course.
Great lamp, and yes I would recommend to a friend.
While this lamp seems somewhat pricey for what you get, it is a very clever design. Basically it is made from one piece of bamboo. Being produced by hand the fit and finish could be described as third world rustic, but it works and and is a nice fit for my somewhat eclectic decor.
I think this lamp is excellent and was easy to put together once I remembered that the wood actually came out of water and would stretch along with the cloth to go into the proper holes. This was the easiest thing to put together. I would recommend untying the cloths just to give a little extra give on each side or to make you feel better as you stretch and then just tie it back. With regards to staining, we had quite a bit that was on the cloth, but it came out easily. Also, DO NOT put polish on this to dust it-or polish oil as I did. It does begin to remove the stain, but I caught it in time and it looks fine. Everyone who has come into the house has commented on the beauty of this lamp. I don't think you'll be sorry to buy this one!
Since I didn't hear back from you, I ordered a different lamp. I would have ordered this one if you had replied sooner.kat8898 on Dec 2, 2013Please enter a valid question.Answer This QuestionThere are no answers to this question yet, be the first to answer it.
Can you tell me if the shade is stark white, emitting a bright white glow... or is it a softer cream or yellow tone?kat8898 on Nov 25, 2013Please enter a valid question.Answer This Question
Hello kat8898, Thank you for your inquiry. The shade is a softer cream or yellow tone. I hope this helps. Happy shopping! overstockcustomercare1 on Dec 2, 2013
Yes. The light bulb sits on the wooden slats, essentially, so is 1"-2" off the ground. I've used it on hardwood and carpeted floors.matadero22 on Apr 4, 2013
Absolutely! Lamp stands straight and doesn't heat carpet at all.jboad on Jun 28, 2013
I have it on tile, put it stays cool (with the recommended light bulb). I get so many compliments on this lamp.shopgirl888888 on Aug 20, 2013
What is the highest wattage bulb recommended for this lamp? Must top bulb and lower bulb be the same wattage for the lamp to work properly or must top and bottom be the same wattage; i.e., can I put a 60w bulb in the top and a 40w bulb in the bottom?lady8art on Dec 1, 2012Please enter a valid question.Answer This Question
Can you confirm that there is no danger to the portion of the lamp? O sm concerned it would get too hot and pose a problem??? on Jul 22, 2012Please enter a valid question.Answer This Question
This item is safe and should not get too hot as long as the correct wattage is used. If the item does heat up dangerously, this would more than likely be a defect, and should be returned. overstockcustomercare1 on Jul 24, 2012
