Story Behind the Art
Kavita, at 18, had seen more tragedy than most do in a lifetime. Her brother was a farmer whose shame at his mounting debt from high cultivation costs and low commodity prices caused him to commit suicide. Her father was too frail and weak to continue his work at the loom. In deep poverty and with no other breadwinners in the household, the responsibility for bringing food to the table came to rest solely on Kavita's shoulders.
Working with local partners and artisan cooperatives, Kavita has been given skills to sustain her family's livelihood through weaving fabrics, block-printing materials, and painting on raw silk. 108 Mala works with Kavita and approximately 300 other female artisans who sell products to help stave off poverty and build small entrepreneurship ventures.
