Crafted by hand in Safi, Morocco, a fishing town on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, known as one of the centers for this art
Uses red clay to create ceramic pottery
Pieces are dried in the sun then baked in kilns that are over 200 years old
Measures: 9 inches high x 8 inches wide
Story Behind the Art: The lead artisans are two brothers Saiyid and Mohamed Elham. Saiyid is 24 years old and Mohamed is 32 years old. They learned this trade from their father, who owns the kilns and commercial space in which the ceramics are created. Their father, is the master artisans who teaches all of the new artisans. In total, there are eight artisans who work full time or part time, all male ranging from 18 years old to 55 years of age. Saiyid has also been taking college classes part time as he is pursuing a degree in business administration. Mohamed is married with two children. It is typical for younger artisans to live with their family as they save up money to be able to sustain a business of their own someday. Loans are not typically taken in this society, as it is difficult to obtain loans from financial institutions. Also, most Muslims do not believe in borrowing money. This is very much a family business passed on from the father to son.
The handcrafted touch of artisan skill will create variations in color, size and design. Color differences may occur between the actual product and your computer screen. If buying two of the same item, slight differences will occur from piece to piece.
The overall quality of this vase is just short of excellent. I would have been perfect if the entire vase were glazed (there are some "naked" spots under the vase and right inside the neck. Overall, I am satisfied and I have it prominently displayed on my Sakure coffee table.
Absolutely beautiful looks better than the picture! I recently purchased a new mahogany dinning room set and wanted a flower vase as a center piece which would accent the rich mahogany color of the table, be a focal point in the room, keep within my color scheme, add to dining conversation and support small artists. This vase fit the bill in every way.
It is Eye candy. The colors are rich. The design delightfully intriguing. The glaze and firing was perfectly executed. You can tell it was hand made by a perfectionist. Thank you Overstock once again your product selection has allowed me to add quality, interest to my home and economic support to a small talented artist. This customer is very happy. Great find!
The photo on the web shows an intense red colored vase that caught my eye. The actual color of the glaze is much much less intense and looks faded, as if about a quarter of the pigment was used. I would describe it as pale brick colored, mainly terra cotta with brown and green.
The carving on the side is hasty and careless as if the focus was mass production, not a beautiful hand made object.
I also ordered the blue plate which was faded and more brown that blue so I'm seeing a pattern. I don't think that I would describe this as a minor variation in color one would expect with handmade things. This is a cheap substitution. Overstock should monitor this supplier more closely and update the photo to represent the actual vase.
I should have saved my money and gone to *** with my $**. I spent it here because I like the fair trade idea. Shady.
