Story Behind the Art:
The women at Cocoki cooperative in Rwanda proudly design and produce these wine coasters from traditional Dutch wax cloth using nothing but their own creativity and foot-powered sewing machines. Indego Africa has been working with Cooperative de Couture de Kicukiro (known as Cocoki), a sewing cooperative of more than 40 women in Kigali, Rwanda, since August 2007. The women at Cocoki are innovative, entrepreneurial and experts at their craft. The Cocoki facility has no electricity or running water, but the women carry on with humor and determination. Before partnering with Indego Africa, more than 90-percent of the women supported an average family of six on $0.50 per day. They now earn four times that much. Indego Africa returns 100-percent of its profits from sales and donations to its partners in order to run culturally-tailored training programs in business management, entrepreneurship, computer skills, and literacy.
