Story behind the art:
Printing is done in small workshops or by families at home. The print design is first drawn on paper. Our design inspiration can come from nature, print books and old or existing prints. On it's approval , a drawing of the design is sent to the block maker who hand cuts the pattern on small blocks of teak wood. Each color requires a separate block. A block takes approximately 2 days to carve and wears out after about 500 square tablecloths. Print colors are freshly mixed each day by the color master in charge of each print workshop. These colors can be vegetable, mineral or chemical. The printer stamps the cloth approximately 700 times to complete printing a square cloth ( 60?x60?) in 5 colors. The printed cloth is washed 4 to 5 times before it is sewn into it's finished product.
