  • Bakota shell mask (Ghana)

I've purchased a number of these masks & I've learned the artists are really artisans that are used to making a smaller number of the same item. They probably get bored. This mask is not dark. There's a round carved frame surrounding the face which is approx. two inches wide. Since the bottom of the mouth is over the 2' outline, it's the same slightly darker color. The photo looks like the mouth hangs below the mask, but it doesn't. Since the color of the face is almost a pastel taupe, the rectangular eye holes don't appear severe, as the photo makes them seem. The nose is raised & is carved differently in the different areas, to coordinate with the carving in the different parts of the face. The top two arcs of the face is carved like faux lizard skin, and there's a small section of each which is carved like a Cowrie shell. The photo looks like there's red paint where the shell carvings are, and as if there might be paint outlining certain areas. There's no paint. It's all carving. One can see the carving in the horizontal strip of the eyes. It's carved like corduroy- & plain above & below the eyes. What's difficult to see is the two arcs below the eyes: They contain upside-down triangles with little diamonds & other shapes carved. The nose is one piece & bisects the face. The top third (by the Cowries) is carved w/ straight diagonal lines on the outsides & what looks like a row of mushrooms in the middle. The middle of the nose is carved like wide-wale corduroy, like the outside of the eyes. The bottom of the nose, by the mouth, has the same diagonal lines carved on the outsides, but where there are mushrooms in the middle of the top, the bottom is plain in the middle. The bottom of the nose comes to a point. There are concentric squares carved around the mouth.

  • The colors on the mask are not as bold as pictured

The mask was not what I expected. The colors of the mask were bold on the site however barely noticeable when I received the product. I would not reccomend this product to others.

  • Art and artifact

A complicated piece with incised metal strips, two cowrie shells, and strings of tiny beads (in the triangles above the eye slots). Another buyer complained that it is less colorful than what's shown in the photo, but I used a soft damp sponge and gently removed some of the stain on the beaded areas to bring out some of the colors. I may apply a matte varnish sometime in the future to emphasize the colors, or perhaps not -- I very much like the soft brown tones and the very slightly bluish rim around the mask. Wouldn't want to change them. It's the first mask I've have ever purchased. I can see now why people collect them. It's both art and artifact.

  • Bakota Shell Mask

I really like the craftmanship of my mask. The photo doesn't represent the mask at all. The mask photo is very colorful, but when I received my mask it was completely brown. I was a little disappointed bcause I thought it would be more colorful. They really need to take another picture to show how the mask really look. Even though it wasn't colorful I still like it. I just hope that the next mask they put on display would be a little colorful.

  • good value for the money

looks great with the rest of the african masks we have on our walls. It is not quite as colorful as it looks on the internet though but still a really nice addition to our collection.
