This handmade creation is offered in partnership with NOVICA, in association with National Geographic.

According to the beliefs of the Akan people of Ghana, anyone with a ti kese ("big head") is said to be very knowledgeable. Court linguists, for example, were said to have big heads, although they would also be the subject of ridicule by passersby. George Obeng celebrates this legendary Akan custom with a hand-carved sese wood mask. He paints it with bright colors and adorns it with ornate brass plates.

    About the Artisan: George Asante

Born in 1963 in a suburb of Accra, George sojourned in the Republic of Nigeria for some four years when he finished high school. He returned to Ghana in 1986 to invest a little capital he had accumulated while there.

After a while, convinced that better fortunes awaited him in life ahead, he turned to wood and the talent of carvers in the Akuapim hills. In 1990 he settled there to begin training as a carver. By the time he graduated, Asante had become the real artist he always knew he was. Four years of careful training had not been undertaken for common standards. Not only did Asante's background knowledge of woodwork help him, but an inbred acumen contrived to bring to the surface a reckonable and talented carver.

George is married and shares three sweet children with his wife. He believes in the strengths and aesthetic values of the woods that he and other colleagues transform into works of art. For good reason, he works out many different forms from these materials ¿ sese wood, cedar wood and twenenboa wood in particular.

  • Akan mask, 'Big Headed Linguist' (GHANA)

I majored in linguistics in school, so when I saw the name of this mask, I had to have it.The flash from the photo misrepresented the metalwork. It looks, in the picture, as if the metal would be silver-toned. It's brass. The metal work is really beautiful, and the shape and size of the mask are exactly what I expected. The metalwork's even better than expected. But what attracted me to this mask are the paint colors as they were represented in the photo. The colors are very bright and intense, and there is a sheen to the paint finish. In reality, the shiny red pictured is a dull matt brick . The yellow is actually a matt orangy-ochre. I will be putting this on the wall behind my sofa, which is bright orange pleather, and the pilows that I'm in the process of making for it are just as colorful.. So I'll be bringing the mask to the craft store to make sure that I get the right materials to make the paint look more like the picture.
