The Story Behind the Product:

Artisans who create Moroccan mosaics are predominantly male who range in age from teenagers to men in their 60s. Mosaics are created in Marrakech, Morocco, using an ancient technique known as Zellige. Zellige use handcrafted ceramic tiles which are hand-cut and intricately placed in geometric designs.

The artisans live comfortably but modestly. Most do not own automobiles but are able to walk to work due to the close proximity of their homes to the medina (center of town). Within the medina, there is a souk (market) where most of the artisans create and sell their work. In speaking to a Moroccan artisan, one will find that he/she is very proud of their art form. The son looks after his family and inherits the secrets of the craft or harfa from his father or grandfather.
