Winchester eVault eV400
 from NC,  Sep 9, 2007

Neat little safe for what it is. I like that it has both electronic and a key lock. The ev400 is more basic because it has no external power supply and relies on batteries only. It still has a small interior light which is nice. If the batteries fail, you can always resort to one of the keys. You can also bolt it down, if you have a place to do that. But mostly, it is good for keeping a loaded weapon in your house without fear of it being accessed by someone other than yourself. I think it would be nice if the buttons were closer together, or in a grooved pattern so you can easier feel them in the dark, but you should still be able to access them fairly quickly.

Fairly good
 from Oregon,  Dec 22, 2011

This products works as advertised. The one thing that I don't like is that if you enter the wrong code there is a short time delay before you can enter another code. If I enter the code correctly, but too quickly, it enters this delay mode. It hasn't been a problem for me, but if there were an imminent threat it could be a problem.

What a great safe.
from Atlanta, GA,  Jul 27, 2010

Pros: solid construction, easy to program, fits my guns no problem, bolts down. Cons: light inside is lame (could be brighter), uses 8 AA batteries So, I was on the fence about which to get, this one or the eV600. I read the reviews about how small the eV400 is and that its hard to do the batteries. I'm 6'4, my hands are large. I used some tape to keep the batteries from popping out and held the safe upside down like many have said. This safe is perfect for me. I have two subcompact Glocks (G27 & G30). I can fit both in or one and two extra mags. Now when I go some where I can't carry, these will be bolted to my car instead of "locked" in the glove box. Comes with a template to use for marking your drill holes. Comes with three screws to use. I'm very pleased. I put it on the floorboard in front of the passenger seat for easy access. People can sit comfortably no problem. Also, shipped super fast.

Solid Vault
 Apr 9, 2010

Overall this safe is well designed and operates smoothly. Buttons are easy to find in the dark, the safe is easy to program, and the internal LED light offers just enough light in the dark to see what is inside. Only down side is that there is no ability to have an external power source. However this is available in all the larger models with the external LCD.

perfect size
from rural ohio,  Mar 29, 2010

The size of this is perfect to fit under console between seats in van. It is not visible from windows and is easy to get to by the driver. Meets CCW requirement to prevent others from access to your gun. I can see where some would have trouble getting batteries in but as women with smaller hands, I had no problems. Key access is very convenient as well as code. It meets my needs perfectly.

Secure but very small
from Mansfield, OH,  Mar 11, 2010

Nice product for the money. I would have easily spent another $50 in a retail store for this gun vault. I will tell you know, it's small, very small. If you don't have smaller hands & a compact or sub compact weapon then forget this one and get the next size up. For me this works great. It didn't take up a lot of space (wall mounted) but its just big enough for my hand to fit inside to grab my pistol (Kahr pm9). Buttons on top are easy to use, light inside stays on for just a few seconds so be quick. Downsides: It's small, or should I say very compact. The batteries are held in a housing in the inside back of the vault, held in by 2 thumb screws, they are tough to get to and you need to have good dexterity to get em back in. Also, to wall mount, you must have an offset angled screwdriver or you will have no hope of getting your screws turned. Maybe a stubby screwdiver might work, maybe. I'm telling you, there is not much space to work and it was very difficult. Aside from that, its heavy and secure and would not hesitate buying another. Be safe friends.

Works as described. Feels heavy duty. Batteries are a pain to put in. Great value. I would get another one.

Excellent Safe! This is my 3rd one...
from Alexandria, VA,  Aug 14, 2009

I've been extremely satisfied with the quality of the Winchester eVault eV400 Electronic Safe. I had two of these safes for a couple of years now when I saw this listed on Overstock at a great price - I ended up buying my third unit.

eV400 vault

Well made and easy to program. You need considerable dexterity to remove the battery holder and then reinstall it without the batteries spilling out. A strip of masking tape solves the problem but the whole design is poor. That being said, a good buy overall.

I Dig it...
from Salt Lake City, UT,  May 15, 2009

I'm happy with it. The batteries are a little bit of a pain to install as some others have said. I'm using a Springfield XD 45 Compact in it with the 13 round clip. I have to angle it to fit it in the safe, so if you have a gun bigger than mine, I'd go with the bigger safe. That being said, I'm happy with the compact size of this one for my gun. It would be better if there were grooves for your fingers and the buttons were set down in the grooves like some safes I've seen. Also, sometimes when I quickly press the buttons, I don't seem to press firm enough or something so it doesn't register that I pressed a button. It's not much of a problem when the sound is enabled since it beeps every time you press a button; but if you have the sound disabled (which is a cool feature), you might not know that you missed pressing the button down well. Overall, I'm satisfied.

Bit of a tight fit for a full sized pistol, smaller framed pistols and revolvers fit perfect. The safe did fit in the small space I needed it to go in.

EV 400
from San Antonio, Texas,  Apr 29, 2009

Good value for the money. Purchased to store .380 Handgun and keep kids out of harm. Had a little trouble installing batteries. Directions really did not show where thumbscrews were to remove and install batteries. Had to reach all the way to the rear of safe to remove thumbscrews. Overall nice little safe. Combination was easy to program. Door opens quickly in the event that you need your handgun. If trying to store a larger weapon would recommend next size up (EV 600). Would recommend this to anyone trying to keep children away from a handgun.

eVault Owner
from New Orleans,  Apr 2, 2009

I live in New Orleans, which has the highest murder rate in the country so to borrow a phrase from American Express, "I never leave home with out it". I originally purchased the Winchester eVault to secure my Glock in my home, but tried it out in my van as well. I feel much more secure knowing that I am taking the safety precautions to prevent unwanted harm to children or others not familiar with firearm safety. It also makes it much more secure from theft! I wanted a safe that would allow me quick access for when I needed it most and this one has the ease of the push button combo with key back up. I placed the vault where an opening of the media console that used to house a small tv. While located close to me (in my van) it is actually behind and to the middle of the to front seats. With the use of the finger touch bumps (Brail) I can locate, open and draw my weapon in less than 5 seconds, whith out having to divert my eyes from the road or possible Perp. It also provides sufficient room to lock and store my extra ammo, my Garmin nuvi 265T, checkbook and spare cash.

Excellent safe for the price!
 from Arizona,  Jul 26, 2008

This safe is the perfect size to keep an unholstered hand gun, with room to spare for some other smaller items. The directions were easy to follow, it's small enough to be put in a nightstand drawer, and the safety features are excelllent (it turns off temporarily after so many incorrect password attempts.) This is perfect for keeping my husband's duty weapon away from my children, while still having very easy access for us if needed. My only complaint with the safe is that installing the batteries could be tricky for a man, fortunately I have small hands so it wasn't a problem- but someone with larger hands might have some trouble.

Nice litte safe
from Sacramento, CA,  Apr 16, 2008

I purchased 2 of these safes so I could have a loaded gun upstairs and downstairs in my house. Lets face it, an unloaded gun is just an expensive rock to throw at someone. I have a small child and now I don't have to worry about him getting a hold of one of my guns. I would recommend this safe to anyone. Easy to use and easy to program.

Good but needs to be wider
 from California,  Mar 5, 2008

Strong construction, a little difficult to install batteries. Easy to program and easy to open with combo. Opening not quite wide enough for a standard automatic pistol (Glock or Smith models). The next level up is 9" instead of 7" wide which may be better if you're using this for a quick access security safe.
