For the price, it's a good deal. The fittings are a little loose, the viewerscope does not line up easily, and a few of the written directions are not clear (but an instructional CD comes with it). It takes a good hour to set up, but it feels solid and heavy when done. The micro-movement knobs make it a little hard to follow your subject, but all in all, a decent telescope, and you can't beat the price.

We're beginners and so we are slowly learning how to use this properly but we have found it to be a lot of telescope for a very reasonable price. My 12-year-old assembled it herself, using the picture directions. Celestron has been very helpful--when we received the telescope, we discovered one defective lens, which Celestron replaced promptly and with no hassle. We would definetely recommend it to beginning stargazers.

Big features for a bargain! Bought a few telescopes over the years, but this one is by far the best quality out of the box. Superior optics, clear eyepieces and whole variety of extra accessories. Tripod is pretty sturdy too. We love watching the moon with it. Tonight were going to watch for a comet. Overstock has very caring customer service and shipping was here in 4 days with standard shipping thanks!

Nice beginner's telescope. Wish it came with more eye pieces.

This is my first telescope and I love it. Assembly was easy. The telescope is easy to use and the eyepieces work great. In the pictures there are two weights, but I only recieved one and it doesn't balance out with only one weight, but maybe I'm just doing it wrong I don't know I'll keep working on it. The finderscope doesn't work very well, but you just have to put on some teflon tape or plumbers tape. Collimation was easy after I bought a Laser Collimator because the telescope did not come with one. Overall I would recommend this telescope for a beginner.

You are getting a great telescope for the price. Easy to put together. Works well as instructed. The plastic part on the turn handle for the rotator feels weak but careful management will hopefully avoid it from breaking. But the overall looks and performance great.

Very well packed. We use it to look at the moon and its perfect. Building it was OK, instructions helped us out. The black finish is just outstanding, reminds me of my onyx jewelry. My husband comes home half hour early every day just to use it. The starry night software that it came with is just great, my son loves using it too. Thank you overstock for quick shipping.

This is a nice, entry-level telescope for the money but make sure your expectations are low. If you hope to get clear views of Jupiter or Saturn you need to get a much more powerful scope. For simple viewing of the sky it's good for practice and determining if you wish for a more serious scope.

I purchased this for my brother. He wears glasses so having the scope with an added eye piece really helped him use the telescope more easliy. The quallity is good and the ease of use is the best part of it.He uses it often.

I bought this for my husband for father's day - he has been wanting a telescope and I thought the price was good - it seems like a good value - he really enjoys using it so that makes it worth it.

Purchased this as a gift. It was well-received and I understand he is happy with it I all ways. The price paid was very reasonable compared to other telescopes with similar features.

I bought this for my husband and it is his 1st telescope. The directions were a little fuzzy but we got it put together. He has enjoyed it so far (been too cold to get a lot of use as of yet) There are a lot of additional items that can be purchased to be used with this telescope. My hubby is a "gadget" person so I would have like it if it had been more complete.

This telescope is great. Exactly as described in the website. the price is "right on"...could not find it cheaper! Easy to assemble. Makes finding object in sky easy to find

Bought this telescope for my husband but not expecting too much because of the price. We are not telescope experts but we were surprised that we could actually see the moon's craters the other night. That alone made it worth it for us. Haven't used the informational CD yet but I think that is a nice bonus to the package.

The telescope was bought for an adult. Not wanting to put too much money into something that might get used a few times then forgotten about, this was a nice option. However, the telescope is better than expected. It is used several times a week. There are things that you need to learn how to use but it's not so bad. The telescope has given him an opportunity to see craters on the moon and much more as if they were right next to him. Great beginners telescope. It is all you need.
Invented by accident in 1608 by an eyeglass maker in Holland, telescopes have allowed astronomers to explore the far reaches of the universe. While professional astronomers use massive optics housed in special observatories to conduct their research, amateur astronomers can have great fun and enjoy the beauty of outer space and the Earth using much smaller and far less expensive equipment. Here is some information to help you understand the basic technologies so you can choose the telescope that will work best for you.
Amateur astronomy equipment ranges from telescopes that will barely fit in the back of a truck and expensive computerized navigation systems to inexpensive binoculars and basic star maps, with everything in between. If you're a beginning hobby astronomer, where should you start? Are refracting telescopes best, or are reflecting telescopes? Should you buy the most expensive telescope you can or start small? You can ask hundreds of different questions about buying a first telescope, but a good way to begin your research is to clear up a few common myths about telescopes.
Spotting scopes, sometimes referred to as monoculars, are small, telescope-like optics that began as tools used by the military. Today, they are widely used in the consumer market for hunting, bird watching, viewing ships, scoring shooting range targets and photography. Spotting scopes can mount on a common camera tripod and are quite suitable for daytime use. They provide more magnification than binoculars and are more portable than most telescopes.
A spotting scope is a good alternative to binoculars and telescopes. Spotting scopes have more range of magnification than binoculars and are easier to carry and more compact than telescopes.
Telescopes have long been regarded as the primary tool for amateur and professional astronomers. But for backyard stargazers, the right tool could be a high-quality pair of binoculars. Less expensive than telescopes, binoculars can provide the stargazer with views of the moon, planets and even the occasional galaxy. Just as if you were buying a telescope, though, you want to consider several factors and features of the different kinds of binoculars before making your purchase.
