Protect your bicycle from dirt and scratches while traveling with this nylon bike cover that is designed to cover your bike while you have it hitched on the back of your vehicle. The large zippered opening lets you easily cover up to two bikes....more
This hitch cover is a great design. It is lightweight and easily fits over two bikes. I had no problem getting it on and getting the straps secured following the instructions. I even got it to cover three with the handlebars folded in line with the frames. In terms of basic function, it kept road dirt and most moisture off of the bikes, and to its credit, survived a five week, 8,500 road trip on the back of our motorhome with only a couple of duct tape patches. The downside is that the fabric is thin and with use gradually stretches out. While this helps to make it easy to cover the bikes, it's also a problem as the waterproofing appears to be sprayed onto the inside of the fabric. As the cover stretches, the waterproofing loses its integrity, so rain and roadspray can get in. In fact, on several occasions after driving in the rain, I found water pooled in the bottom of the cover. There are drain holes on the bottom, but these seemed to rarely align with the low point due to the straps.I think the key to longevity with this cover are two fold. First, only cover two bikes maximum to reduce any stretching. Second, don't cinch the straps down very tight for the same reason. If you're not headed out on a five week road trip, this should prove to be a useful, lightweight cover for a reasonable time period. Overstock.com had the lowest price on this item of the several that I checked in early June.
I used this product to cover 2 bicycle on the back of a 5th wheel trailer traveling from from Utah to Ohio and then the return trip back to Utah. It worked great, never ripped or leaked. The straps helped remove the bulk of the cover to fit around the odd shapes of the bikes. I admit, I was a little worried for the first few hundred miles wondering what I might find at the back of the trailer. Repeated inspection found no problems and we completed our trip with complete confidence in the product.
For the money, this is an excellent buy. They are made by Swagman. I purchased one for each bike (3) as I am using them, with a little modification, on a 4 bike Thule platform hitch rack. My previous bag made by Adco, had a much larger zipper. The MSRP on the ADCO bag is more than 3 times the cost of this bag. The material seems the same. The picture shows two straps, but there are many more. I didn't count them, but a guess would be 5. If you have a pointed object, such as a brake handle sticking into the bag, put a cloth over the handle as it will wear through very quickly. The top corners should have been reinforced by the manufacturer. I am going to try and reinforce the corners with a iron on patch on the inside. If it doesn't stick, I will use a towel over the brake handle. Pull all the straps a tight as you can. These bags will see almost 4000 miles in the next few months.
Excellent product, directions were a little difficult to understand at first, but after reading them several times, we finally figured out how to mount the cover over the bike rack to the bike hitch. In tighting up the traps that were attached to the cover, one of the clips broke on one side. The plastic snaps are not that durable, should be a little stronger.
The directions that came with it are poor and poorly worded. They certainly do not make it clear that the bag needs to be inserted over the receiver before the rack is attached, so I got to do most of the procedure over again the first time I used this bag. I have a rack where the bikes sit on the rack rather than hang from it, so getting the bag zipped was a tight fit even though I was only putting two foldup geezer campground bikes on the rack. You could probably put two regular bikes in this bag if they were on a hanging rack, but otherwise things could be tight. The bikebag held up well during the first trip, and having them on the back of the travel trailer was easier than folding up the bikes and putting them in the truck - especially for trips where you have a lot of stuff that needs to be in the truck.
This is the way I do it. First off, I do not run the cover over the bike rack leg.
This way when I take the bikes off the rack I don't have to goof around to get
the cover off of the bike rack. I also use the cover upside down. Zipper side down.
This elevates water buildup in the cover when it rains. Water drains through
the zippers. The straps are sewn on pretty good and they are very functional.
The loops where the straps go through are not sewn as well as the rest of the
cover so you can't utilize them to tie off the loose ends of the tiedown straps.
Overall an excellent product.
The fabric is water resistant as advertised, but zippers on top are not. This lets water through. I solved this problem by covering my bikes with a bbq cover first, then the Swagman cover. Not really made for the Swagman XTC-2 (Platform-Style) bike rack but I got it to work by putting the cover on the receiver tube through the hole in the bottom of the cover then installing the rack. It works fine like this but to remove the cover you have to uninstall the rack.
If you are trying to protect some inexpensive bikes from the weather then this cover is for you. I used this on some nice bikes and after 500 mikes the paint job on both bike was ruined. There is no soft liner in this cover. Just nylon rubbing like sandpaper against your frames. The cover itself held up very well behind the motorhome. It was secured well and took about five times taking the bikes and rack off and on before finally getting the correct orientation to barely fit our **** ** rack. I did notice afterwards that the instructions note this cover is for hanging racks only. It was not stated anywhere on the overstocks page the type of racks that this cover was compatible. Otherwise, I would have purchased a different cover. It will work, but will not zip up all the way if used on a flat bike rack.. However, if you have one of those, you probably have too nice of a bike to use this cover on in the first place. I will be looking for a nice motorcycle cover that will work for the future. Preferably one with a soft scratch fee liner on the inside.
Be aware that this cover will not work with a platform style bike rack, I called Swagman and they confirmed that it works mostly with rail type bike racks and the only other cover they make is for a ladder mount on an RV. The rack I have is a BELL Right Up.

Since the reflectors from the tow hitch are getting covering up by the bike cover. Is it wise, or should you have reflectors to the attach to the bike cover? It is sticking out at least by 3 feet. What do you suggest?kn2ovv on Jun 8, 2014Please enter a valid question.Answer This Question
Hi kn2ovv, You can put reflectors on the cover if you want, but since the taillights aren't covered, the vehicle should be visible if lights are working and on. Thank you for shopping with us.overstockcustomercare1 on Jun 23, 2014
