I was looking for a simple, inexpensive roof rack for my small Mazda Protege 5 using the standard roof racks. This fits perfectly and will give me the mobility I need to tour around NJ looking for interesting rides. Good fit, solid and simple. I do have to get used to driving more tamely though with a bike on the roof.
Like several others, my racks could not withstand normal use. About 4 weeks after I bought them, the spot welds broke on one rack. Luckily, Overstock was very nice and helpful, and sent out a replacement rack. About 1 week after that, the other original rack broke in the same way. (Again, Overstock is sending a replacement.) Now, I'm left to cross my fingers and hope it doesn't happen again. I should note that, even when the welds do break, there is a single bolt that still holds the fork mount to the rack and to your roof rack. This is in no way stable enough to use normally, but it's somewhat good to know that your bike won't literally fall off of your car if the welds do break.Overall? Overstock is low cost and very helpful. These racks? Not worth it.
Good quality bike racks. They worked as advertised. I'd recommend them. Now I have room for a third rack on top of my Honda Pilot, but overstock only sells them in pairs. Need to find one additional rack.
- Did the product fit true to size? Yes
- How is the quality of the product? Good quality
- Was the product free of any manufacturer defects? Yes
These racks are truly universal in that they can be adjusted to fit pretty much any bike or any roof rack. The major complaint that everyone has with them is that they are partially held together with very weak welds. Normal side to side rocking that the bike experiences in cornering or rough roads is enough to break the welds. When I received my set, one look at the design made it obvious that the welds would break when exposed to rough roads. The solution, however, is easy. I just drilled two holes, one on either side of the two big metal plates that are held together by the welds. I inserted bolts in the holes, used large washers on both sides, and a nut on the end of the bolts. The bolts provide a much stronger connection than the welds, and the large washers spread the force over a bigger surface area so things don't get bent out of shape over time. With this simple modification, my rack has held together even on very rough dirt roads. I've used the racks for about 6 months of frequent use with no signs of weakening. The extra bit of work that was required was well worth it considering the price of name brand bike racks.
good for a cheap rack. all fasteners are nylon insert locknuts so should stay tight together. Holes all along to fit varying spacing on crossbars, my car's crossbars do not slide at all. quick release clamps well. Fastens to bars with 2 different sizes of U-bolts supplied so it is very universal. U bolts fasten with hand knobs.
This bike rack is very, very cheap. It is flimsy, difficult to assemble, rusts easily, and looks bad. But, it is easily the least expensive bike rack I've ever encountered. I am happy with my purchase just because I know I'm not going to get much use out of it, and I'm only going to go short distances with bikes attached. If you have any serious use for a rack, then don't buy this, you'll end up needing a more rugged one anyway.
Exactly what I needed. Low tech simple way to haul my bike without drilling holes or otherwise modifying my vehicle or having to buy other equipment to support it (hitch). Two for **** was a great deal. Gives me the option of using one or both. Easy to take on and off after you initially assemble them. Took about 30 minutes to assemble and place one.
Excellent quality and craftsmanship, very sturdy and stable, surprisingly lightweight for how sturdy they are. Really easy to set up, I got them both out of the box and mounted in about 20 minutes. Completely tool less after the first install, very easy to install and uninstall to vehicle by hand. Very universal - Comes with wide and narrow bracket adapters to support wider crossbars and also to be more stable with the more narrow crossbars. The rack can also be shortened to accommodate shorter bikes if you wish. The rack can handle any size bike. The rack doesn't slide or shift while driving, even with aggressive driving. The only con I've come across is that It's a bit of work to lift your bike to the top of an SUV and get it attached to the mount, or I imagine it would be for a shorter person, so you may need an extra pair of hands to assist while mounting your bike. The product itself is perfect so far though. Very good value for the money, highly recommended if you have a roof rack already.
I puchased this item to take two bikes on a vacation road trip and was very pleased. I am sure that there are higher quality items out there -- and much more expensive -- but this one worked as promised and seemed of decent quality. I give it four stars for three minor problems. First is that the assembly instructions are terrible. Neither the pictures or the words match the actual product. It's pretty easy to figure out but took longer than it should. Second is that the brackets that attach the rack to the car's roof rack can easily scratch or damage the car. I wrapped a piece of a towel around the roof rack where the bike rack attached which prevented any damage. Finally, one of the attachment points would not tighten enough to fit a child's bike and, part-way through the trip, the bike came loose. This was my fault because I didn't make sure the bike was secure before we left and there was no damage done. Fortunately I had a packing strap which I was able to use to secure the bike down on the rack until I could get some washers to fill the gap and fully tighten it down. For extra security, I plan to use the strap next time as well, even with the washers.
The bike hasn't fallen off the roof yet, so I'd say that it works. The best thing about this rack is that it attaches to your factory rack on your vehicle. So many other rack companies require you to buy all their components and $400 to $500 later you can get your bike to where you want it. So typically user-UNfriendly, and such a great relief when you can find a company that makes the simple thing you need and doesn't charge you an arm and a leg. Great product.
So far so good - I have no complaints to date. Overstock was awesome to work with and continues to provide excellent customer service. I have no doubt that should a problem or issue arise with this item I have the highest confidence the O.S. would make it right. Thank you for an easy and enjoyable experience!
it look great, installation is a peice of cake ...i like it
I want to give O a great big Kudos for all the effort they did to help in resolving a problem with our first set of bike racks. The first set came damaged. I called O and told them of the problem. They went all out to help get me a set that was perfect. Now to review the bike racks. We have two older bikes that are quite heavy. We mounted them on and hoped that the bike racks would hold them securely. We traveled from NC, to SC, to Fla, and then to Ala, and they held on without any problems. I have to say I had my doubts, but these racks worked great. I would highly recommend these bike racks to anyone needing them. And for the price you can't beat that either. My thanks to O for all of their work and the courtesy people I dealt with. Would like to tell the people who get products that they are unhappy with, just let O know and they will help you get what you need resolved. That's been my experience with them.
One of my 2 racks also came apart on the spot weldings, I honestly don't understand how the manufacturer came up with the idea of such weldings for the type of product. Anyhow, the people at Overstock came forward despite my order being over the 30 initial days of the purchase date, they sent me a new pair, and oddly this time instead of spot welds, the new pair was welded differently, let's see how well these will do, too bad this review is not for Overstock.com, otherwise I would give better rating.
I ordered these thinking that I was getting a good deal. I was wrong. The area where the bike fork mounts to the rack is held on by very weak spot welds. I have used these racks 3 times for short(20 min) trips to the trailhead. Both have come apart at the welds. Very disappointed. Spend your money on something of better quality.
I looked at several roof racks available: Thule, Yakima. This is a good value for the cost. I would recommend this rack due to the low cost and good quality.
overall product is good. its built good, the fork mounts are nice,it adjusts to different lengths for different lengths of bicycles.i like the product and the price is great.they are just a little heavier than your top name brands and there is no way to lock them to the crossbars from theft without replacing stock hardware.they work great.
