Some learning and educational toys encourage independent learning while still focusing on listening comprehension. By using a variety of educational games and toys available focused on listening skills, children can learn while having fun. For every correct answer, provide some type of reward. If reading to a group, turn the questions into a group game. Many books focus solely on improving listening skills, such as riddle books which require kids to listen to and remember all details before they can solve the riddle. Other books include guessing games such as "20 Questions." To guess the answer, kids must remember the answers to the 20 questions. Videos and music: Many kids' movies, shows, and songs are actually full of games. These games require children to listen carefully to perform the desired task. Best Cell Phone Features
With the bevy of options and features now available in cell phones, it's easy to find one perfect for you. Before you begin searching for your next cell phone, take the time to think about what you need your phone to do. Below, you'll learn the best cell phone features. Camera: Cell phone cameras can be quite handy when you happen upon a special moment without a regular digital camera on hand. Most camera phones don't take very high-resolution (usually 1.3 megapixel) pictures, but there are some that top out over 3 megapixels. Some cell phone cameras even have small flashes. If you want a camera phone, find out if it comes with the cable and software to connect to your computer, so you don't have to spend extra for a separate program. Video: Usually, camera phones that play video will also record video. Some non-camera cell phones also play video. Look to see if you can transfer movies from your phone to your computer. Web browsing: Many cell phones let you connect to the Internet. Most use Wireless Access Protocol (WAP), which allows the phone to connect to pages specifically designed for cell phones. There are many phones with full browsers, however, that allow you to view regular Web pages. Bluetooth: Bluetooth is a technology that allows you to transfer data wirelessly between devices. Wireless cell phone headsets use this technology, and it can also be used to transfer pictures, ringtones and other data between two cell phones or between cell phones and computers. Games: There are cell phones out there that have been designed with the gamer in mind, allowing you to download games that would compare to those found on a personal gaming system. Office software: Most cell phones feature some sort of a calendar and alarm. You can set a wake-up alarm or you can make it alert you for your next appointment. Other phones allow you to make notes for each appointment. Some let you create documents that can be transferred to your computer's word processor or spreadsheet. MP3 player: More and more cell phones are also MP3 players. Check to see if you need special headphones for listening (and if they're included), and pay attention to the phone's memory capacity. Memory expansion: Some phones, usually video or MP3 player phones, feature memory card slots, so you can save pictures, music or other files on removable flash memory. Voice dialing: If you absolutely have to use your cell phone while driving, you'll want one with voice dialing. The phone recognizes the contact you speak and places the call, allowing you to keep your eyes where they belong: on the road. Buy Cell Phones Back to Guides Directory Buy Cell Phones
Best Ideas for a Cowboy Birthday Party
Plan the perfect cowboy birthday party for your little cowhands and their posse with a Western-themed party. With the right decorations, games and food, you can create a hoedown that your child and his or her friends will remember for years to come. Find cowboy party supplies and crafts for a colossal cowboy party, and don't forget to capture every moment with your camera. Invitations. Create cowboy party invitations that look like "wanted" posters using recycled brown cardstock paper. Print a black-and-white picture of the cowboy or cowgirl of honor in the center and use an old-style font or block lettering. Include the time and place for the round-up on the cowboy party invitations. Use fun phrases such as "howdy partner" and "saddle up for the showdown" for added laughs. Ask guests to come in their favorite cowboy attire, including rugged jeans, flannels and boots. Decorations. For cowboy party decorations, cover tables with red and white tablecloths. Display "wanted" posters of the birthday cowboy or cowgirl throughout the cowboy party room. Add balloons in colors of red, white and blue. Shape strands of rope into lassos and place them on the tables or hang them on chairs. Use bandanas or a Western-themed fabric for place mats. Create large cutouts of cacti, horses and cowboys for decorations. Bales of hay, stalks of corn and other items can add to the cowboy party decorations. Place bottles of water or juice boxes in a wheelbarrow filled with ice for refreshments. Dress up. Costumes and clothing can add to the cowboy birthday party theme. Because all guests may not know each other, give each guest a name tag cut to look like a sheriff's badge. Use silver cardstock cut into star shapes and attach the name tags with safety pins or tape. Provide guests with bandanas in a variety of colors. Give each guest a straw cowboy hat and a water pistol for an authentic cowboy look. Games. Though cowboys can be serious, there is nothing like having several fun games planned for even the roughest, toughest cowboy to enjoy. If you're holding a summer party, tell all cowboys and cowgirls to bring their swimsuit for a shoot-out using water pistols. Have a galloping contest; use brooms as pretend ponies and have races to see whose horse is the fastest. Old-fashioned potato-sack jumping contests are easy to assemble. Hold a boot toss contest: Have children toss bean bags, gold coins or other cowboy party supplies into an old pair of worn cowboy boots. Food. Create an old-fashioned homemade spread, complete with a cowboy party cake. Barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs or sloppy joes are always a favorite for little cowboys and cowgirls. Salsa and chips, beef jerky and even pulled pork sandwiches are additional ideas. Corn on the cob and cornbread are traditional cowboy staples. Create a cowboy party cake in the shape of a hat, pony or boot to continue the theme. Goodie bags. Thank each guest for coming by giving them a galvanized pail filled with cowboy party favors. Fill each pail with a small amount of straw or hay. Add trail mix, gold coins and licorice rope to each pail. Tie pieces of raffia or fabric for additional decoration to the pail's handle. For other cowboy party favors, consider purchasing small plastic harmonicas, sheriff badges and cowboy figurines. View All Crafts Back to Guides Directory View All Crafts
1080p-HDTVs vs 1080i-HDTVs
High-definition televisions provide a higher resolution image than standard-definition televisions. Typically, HDTVs are available in three types: 720p, 1080i, and 1080p. The 720p and 1080i resolution TVs are quickly being replaced with 1080p as the industry standard, but there are still a lot of them on the market. Here are some comparison points for both 1080i and 1080p televisions to help you decide which will work best for you. What the numbers mean. In both 1080p and 1080i HDTVs, "1080" refers to the number of lines that make up an image on the screen. Each line is made up of tiny colored dots called pixels. The greater the number of lines, the better the resolution or clarity of the image. A 1080p HDTV displays 1,080 lines of pixels, whereas a regular television uses only 480 lines. Both versions of 1080i and 1080p HDTVs are superior to the 720p HDTV and to SDTV. What the letters mean. The difference between 1080i and 1080p HDTV resolution is seen in the way the lines appear on the screen. The "i" in 1080i or 720i stands for interlaced, meaning the odd-numbered lines appear on the screen followed by the even-numbered lines. The HDTV "interlaces" the lines together to produce an image. This happens faster than your eyes can detect, so you only see the full image. The "p" in 1080p or 720p stands for progressive scan, which means that lines appear sequentially on the screen. For this reason, the latter is said to have a sharper, cleaner image. Cost differences. When the technology was first released, a 1080p HDTV was significantly more expensive than 1080i HDTVs. The price of all HDTVs has dropped dramatically in recent years, however. You'll find great deals on both 1080i and 1080p HDTVs, so the price difference is negligible in most cases. Programming availability. Although 1080p picture clarity might be higher than 1080i, the resolution of the video source being used also matters. Most HDTV broadcasts go no higher than 1080i. Most video games are currently made in 720p, but a few are available in 1080p. Blu-ray players do support 1080p, and more Blu-ray discs are being made to take advantage of this capability. Some on-demand cable and satellite providers offer programming in high definition as well. The 1080p resolution and image quality are quickly being adopted by manufacturers and content providers, so look for more content for HDTVs that take full advantage of this technology. FAQs about Video Game Ratings
Video games are one of the hottest forms of entertainment on the market. Top-selling video games often make more money than the most popular Hollywood blockbusters. Like movies, they are created and marketed for audiences that range from toddlers to mature adults. To protect those audiences, the Entertainment Software Rating Board, established in 1994, rates the content of all video games so consumers can make informed decisions. The ratings are composed of two parts: age-appropriateness and content descriptors. This article answers some of the most frequently asked questions about video game ratings.
