This Fuel Helmets Full Face Helmet was designed for riders, by riders. High end features such as removable washable cheek pads and a light-weight thermoplastic shell provide comfort while the sleek design and closeable mouth and brow vents provide function and style.
I needed a helmet and wanted to get something that wouldn't break (what was left of) my budget after purchasing a motorcycle. I checked out some reviews of sub-$100 helmets and the Fuel F1 seemed to get the better end of the budget helmet reviews so I decided to take a chance on it.
The helmet arrived quickly and fit nice and snug. Not overly tight, but enough it wouldn't rotate on it's own if you turned your head quickly. If you go to Fuel's website The padding is pretty firm with a mesh covering to help improve airflow and there are vents both above and below the visor as well as on top to help air flow freely into the helmet. The helmet has a nice glossy black finish on it with a clear visor.
While the helmet seems plenty sturdy and will certainly protect your head well enough in a crash, there are a few things that unfortunately come with a helmet like this. I'll preface it by saying these aren't deal breakers for me, but it might be a bit much for some others:
1. Vent/Visor leakage: The vents are great... Until you close them and they start whistling. Quite honestly the wind noise is pretty bad in this helmet. My bike is fairly loud (Baffled drag pipes) and the noise from the vents has started started me using earplugs. With the vents open it isn't quite as bad. I have only been around locally this year (Still a bit too cold for any long distances) but I am pretty sure highway speeds with this helmet is going to be pretty obnoxious. I've been up to about 55 MPH and the noise is quite loud. Hopefully the plugs will make it tolerable at 65 -70 MPH. I think the visor leaks as well but it is hard to differentiate between it and the vents. Aside from the noise, in cooler conditions the vents not closing completely let cold air in which depending on your tolerance can get cold pretty quick.
2. Visor scratching: The visor itself has no anti-scratch coating it seems. You would think in this day and age that would be standard, but this seems to scratch up and scuff pretty easily. While the solution here is quite simple (Take care of your gear and only wash the vizor with soapy water and a soft cloth NO PAPER TOWELS!) a vizor is bound to scratch up from road debris being kicked up and general use. I wouldn't expect more than one season out of it before the scratches eventually start to hinder your vision in bright sun conditions.
3. No visor replacements: I wanted to get a smoke visor for it and discovered that they don't make them for this helmet anymore. I sent an email to Fuel asking about the smoke visor and they offered to send me one free of charge. Unfortunately because this is "last years" helmet (Maybe older since the last catalog on thier website is from 2008?) they only had a certain years visor. They had warned me that this may be the case since they had changed the helmet frequently and made it clear that if this didn't fit, they do not have a vizor that fits my helmet. Part of me wants to be annoyed by this but I keep going back to the fact that I paid about 2/3rds what the helmet costs in other places by using Overstock and remind myself that sometimes this is the cost of going cheap. I have to say that the customer service from Fuel (Comfort products?) was top notch but they should really keep some stock on hand since the Visors scratch so easily.
4. No glasses allowed: Yeah, there is no way. Not happening. This was a particular area of disappointment since I can't wear sunglasses and (as mentioned above) can't get a smoke vizor either. I can pull out the cheek padding and that might allow for the glasses to fit but that also seems to defeats a lot of the point in having a full face helmet.
Overall I feel like I got what I paid for and am happy with my purchase. The helmet will do fine for this riding season and will probably become a secondary backup for next year. If you are in a bit of a pinch like I was I say "Go for it!" but be prepared for the downsides. If you can swing the extra money, you should get a better grade helmet. Even breaking into the $100 to $200 range will land you a less noisy helmet that will make your ride much more enjoyable.
Bottom line: Good in a pinch, but there is definitely better out there for a little more scratch.
