In order to adjust to a higher level of resistance, you have to TURN/TWIST the ring. The ring DOES NOT pull down to the level you want. You have to turn the ring and there is a gray meter that goes up or down depending on the direction you TURN the ring....With that said, this product is amazing.
I bought my son one of these about 15 years ago......he made a comment in November that he wished he could find another one. So, I packed that in the back of my brain.....for Christmas. First place I looked was Overstock.....to my surprise, there it was! I ordered, and when he received it Christmas morning....he was shocked, and delighted!! He could not believe I found one. He uses it to build his forearm muscles for arm wrestling! He said it was his best gift.....yay mom!! Thanks 'O'!!

Before purchase, I read another review stating that the tension adjustment was mounted on the frame in such a way that you could not move it past 1.5lbs, despite the advertised limit being 5lbs. I decided to give it a try anyways......unfortunately, that reviewer was 100% correct. This item is useless and does not work as advertised, do NOT waste your money! The only positive comment I can make is that Overstock.com made the return easy once I contacted one of their Live Chat representatives. Again, do not buy unless you are interested in a return!
THe info claims "Exercise machine has five levels of tension ". HA! The adjustment ring you turn to change it is against part of the frame, and cannot move forward really. Oh, the display shows it SHOULD go to 5lbs, but the best you can ever hope for is about 8/10lbs to 1lbs range. It is not that I cannot figure it, trust me, the ring cannot move because of the design! Beyond that, I suspect it is just an okay unit, but the inability to adjust the tension ruins it. It i really a cheap peice of junk, don't get it! I wish I had not.
