I've been looking for a good headlamp for flying small airplanes at night for a while. So far, this looks fairly decent - a good idea with the major design done well with a couple minor caveats. Light selection is Blue-Red-OFF-Dim-Medium-Bright (white), which is very good for night flight since the white settings are on the opposite side of OFF from blue/red, and bright is the furthest selection out. Adjustable headstrap, lamp pivots down 45 degrees. Getting the battery compartment open and locked is tough on the fingers and takes a fair amount of pushing hard and finagling. 3 AAs sit in a tubular cage that you have to shake out of the housing. Minor quibbles. The light selector knob has very shallow detents and the knob is small so it can be a bit fiddly to get used to. The red light seems appropriate brightness, but the blue seems a bit bright for reading a chart at night without harming your night vision. The blue and red are done via a small LED on either side of the main lamp and provides wide, even coverage. The white light is rather more (but not completely) focused into a spot, similar to a flashlight. Overall, it seems decent and I'm looking forward to trying it in the airplane. I've used it on an emergency survival training / camping exercise and it was great.
