Know nothing about astronomy but wanted something new to do with the 'old man. Wanted something appropriate for a beginner but did not want a toy, child's telescope or cheap plastic. Wanted a real, quality telescope with some room to grow into, not grow out of in 10 minutes. This was the best thing I could find during my research and given the price I think it's one of the best values in it's category. We spend time in a high mountain area with some spectacular terestrial views as well as an ideal low-polution sky environment so I think a Newtonian is a good choice for a beginner who wants to be able to look at both.Parts seem durable, it was easy to set up and there were some great resources to get started and learn terminology and concepts. I look forward to learning more about this field of study and hope this scope lasts for quite some time.
I bought this as a christmas gift for my mother who knows nothing about telescopes,(neither do I)Overstock helped me out a great deal by having the link to the tips for beginners and what to pick for night gazing or day time and which telescope works best for beginners or experts. We love the product!!
We're beginners and so we are slowly learning how to use this properly but we have found it to be a lot of telescope for a very reasonable price. My 12-year-old assembled it herself, using the picture directions. Celestron has been very helpful--when we received the telescope, we discovered one defective lens, which Celestron replaced promptly and with no hassle. We would definetely recommend it to beginning stargazers.
For the price, it's a good deal. The fittings are a little loose, the viewerscope does not line up easily, and a few of the written directions are not clear (but an instructional CD comes with it). It takes a good hour to set up, but it feels solid and heavy when done. The micro-movement knobs make it a little hard to follow your subject, but all in all, a decent telescope, and you can't beat the price.
Since I've never owned a telescope I would say this is probably a very good one. I got it with nothing missing or nothing broken. But when i put it together I was surprised at how big it is. I had delegated a space in our condo to put it but this was just way too big to fit that space. I had no choice but to take it all apart and send it back. I got confused with the measurements section in the description. I wasn't sure what they we're talking about as far as height and width etc, so you might have someone explain this to you before ordering. I would recommend it to others but I would also say, ...know how big this scope really is before you order.
Telescope is ok but the tripod is very flimsy. The assembly instructions leave a great deal to be desired. Annotated pictures would have helped a great deal. The "Quick Set Up Guide" is an invitation to disaster. I would not recommend this for a beginner.
The telescope arrived in a timely manner and was not difficult to assemble. We've used it more as a spotting telescope rather then looking at celestial bodies. In time the grandsons will be using and enjoying.
Hello grannyj, this item includes one eyepiece that is 20 mm (0.79 in), with a magnification of 45 x. The second eyepiece is 4 mm (0.16 in), with a magnification of 225x. The Barrow lens is 3x (1.25").I hope this helps and thank you for shopping with us.overstockcustomercare1 on Nov 30, 2014
