  • Boyt H4 Double Handgun Travel Case

This is an extremely well made case with plenty of room for two full size handguns and six mags. The case fits into a typical roll aboard type suitcase with room to spare, although as you should know, all firearms have to be declared, have to travel as checked baggage, and have to be in a locked case according to the airlines' and TSA regs. The locked case, after inspection, can, and in my opinion should, be placed inside a separate unlocked suitcase. There are two cam type latches that firmly close the case, but they do not lock it as required by TSA and the airlines. This case can be locked, but the locks are not included. The tricky part is finding a lock that will hold the case closed without permitting the case to be partially opened, ie no play in the locking system. There is a perimeter flange that has a 3/8 inch hole in each front corner that you can use for locks. The flange, when the case is closed, is 1 inch thick. The best kind of lock to use is a receiver or coupler lock as typically used for towing equipment. (A typical padlock has a curved shackle which would not be able to be pulled through the 1 inch long hole in the flange) The problem is finding two locks that have exactly 1 inch of clearance and are keyed alike. I did find one butterfly style coupler lock with 1 inch span, but the company does not make them available as keyed alike. I eventually settled on a bolt style coupler lock with 7/8 inch clearance, although will have to drill a 1/8 inch recess in the bottom part of the flange in order to close the lock. The locks will make it difficult for someone to get into the case quickly. The case is made of thick plastic that is not brittle. It will definitely take a pounding without cracking. Even so, an electric jigsaw and one minute are all it would take to cut it open. This is true of all commercially available firearm travel cases whether they be metal or plastic. There are three layers of high quality foam inside. The middle layer can be cut to outline the contents. I used a scroll saw to cut the foam although a hot wire or electric carving knife can also be used. A hot wire cutter or scroll saw provide the best level of detail, a knife will be more jagged and allow less detail. All in all an excellently built case, just a bit of a challenge to lock it properly for airline travel. Maybe Boyt could commission a lock for this case ! ?

  • Very good case

Case is the OEM version of the case that cabelas offers. If you want to save a few bucks and avoid the cabelas logo, this is a very good buy. Case is very sturdy and perfectly sized for my handgun, laser/light, 4 mags, suppressor, and small accessories. It could hold two full size hand guns a pair of mags as well. I prefer this case's locking mechanism to the pelican cases. Other than that, the two brands seem very similar, with the only difference being that pelican offers their cases with the pick and pluck foam, which I do not like.

  • roomy & strong

When it comes to waterproof, dry storage type containers, I think Boyt's are the best. They offer plenty of protection for whatever you choose to put inside them. As far as handguns are concerned they also offer plenty of room for two. There's enough room to fit even two Desert Eagles inside no problem.I also really prefer the twist type lock down mechanisms the Boyt's come with when all the competetors use the same plastic or fiberglass-type material as the rest of the case. Boyt uses metal for theirs, which is nicely powdercoated. These cases are built well and made to last.
