The rail allows the mounting of additional accessories such as a riflescope, laser, flashlight and other optic accessories.     Took a little work with a file to get it to fit but that has been the norm with most parts i've ordered for the sks. Otherwise its worth what I paid for it.

This item is meant to fit most SKS rifles. I think it would be best to provide you with the following dimensions so you can measure the compatibility with their rifle. The rail length is 3.4 inches and the exact dimensions of the entire mount are 2.25*5*1.25. Please let me know if you have any further question. overstockcustomercare1 on Feb 6, 2013

The sku#14254848 is for an SKS Mount that mounts on to the SKS rifle, and you can attach a scope on top of that rail; the rail is a Weaver style, if the customer has weaver rings on his 6x40 scope it will work. overstockcustomercare1 on Jan 8, 2013
