FAQs about Binoculars
Whether you're an outdoorsman, sports fan, star gazer or sightseer, a good pair of binoculars is a must. Binoculars bring the view to you in spectacular detail making your favorite activities even better. Finding a pair of binoculars that does what you want it to do will improve almost any outdoor activity.
How to Care for Binoculars
Thanks to the zooming power of binoculars, you can gain access to sights that would otherwise be inaccessible. Binoculars are perfect for bird watching, taking on a hike and a plethora of other uses. However, spotting sights are only as good as the maintenance that goes into them. A broken or dirty pair of binoculars isn't going to do the job correctly. Whether you have a pair of bird watching binoculars, night vision binoculars, a monocular or any other variety of binoculars, they'll only work correctly if you give them the proper care. Make sure you keep the window to nature open by keeping your binoculars in good working condition. Here are some tips to make sure your binoculars have a long shelf life.
Binoculars Buying Guide
Many outdoor activities have recently grown in popularity, including nature watching with binoculars. From watching larger animals, like deer and bear, to watching delicate birds or raptors in flight, a pair of binoculars is an important accessory. They can also give you a better view at a concert or sporting event, and you can even use binoculars for star gazing. The world has so many amazing things out there for you to see, and to see it all clearly, you'll need binoculars. If you are not sure how to buy them, let this buying guide help you focus on your new hobby.
Best Binoculars for Stargazing
Telescopes have long been regarded as the primary tool for amateur and professional astronomers. But for backyard stargazers, the right tool could be a high-quality pair of binoculars. Less expensive than telescopes, binoculars can provide the stargazer with views of the moon, planets and even the occasional galaxy. Just as if you were buying a telescope, though, you want to consider several factors and features of the different kinds of binoculars before making your purchase.
Best Binoculars Extras
If you have read our binoculars buying guide, you know what to look for when you're shopping. If you'd like extra features in your binoculars that make them truly special, then consider these. You can often find great discount binoculars with plenty of extras by shopping online. Whether you need bird-watching binoculars, a monocular, or some night vision binoculars, you'll appreciate a few extra features.
How to Use a Spotting Scope
A spotting scope is a good alternative to binoculars and telescopes. Spotting scopes have more range of magnification than binoculars and are easier to carry and more compact than telescopes.
Spotting Scope Fact Sheet
Spotting scopes, sometimes referred to as monoculars, are small, telescope-like optics that began as tools used by the military. Today, they are widely used in the consumer market for hunting, bird watching, viewing ships, scoring shooting range targets and photography. Spotting scopes can mount on a common camera tripod and are quite suitable for daytime use. They provide more magnification than binoculars and are more portable than most telescopes.
Night Vision Terminology
There's quite a bit of science that explains night vision, but only a few terms will be important as you choose a night vision device. When you're searching for optics and binoculars to use for night vision, you will want to pay attention to such things as light amplification, resolution and clarity. The following terms can help you understand what aspects of your night vision device will affect how well you see when you use it.
Telescopes - Myths and Facts
Amateur astronomy equipment ranges from telescopes that will barely fit in the back of a truck and expensive computerized navigation systems to inexpensive binoculars and basic star maps, with everything in between. If you're a beginning hobby astronomer, where should you start? Are refracting telescopes best, or are reflecting telescopes? Should you buy the most expensive telescope you can or start small? You can ask hundreds of different questions about buying a first telescope, but a good way to begin your research is to clear up a few common myths about telescopes.
Night Vision Buying Guide
Night vision devices have been in use since World War II, but in recent years, night vision has become available to civilians as well. Night-vision devices allow you to see in very low lights. Like other optics and binoculars, night-vision devices can also magnify objects so they will appear closer, but the main use of night vision is to see things that your eye wouldn't normally be able to see in the dark or in low light. With all of the great uses for night vision, you may want to join in the fun, but if you're not sure how to buy night vision, then it can be tricky to know where to start. This night vision buying guide was designed to help you understand the different types of night-vision devices so you can find the one that works best for you.
How to Waterproof Fabric Outdoor Furniture
Most fabric outdoor furniture is water-resistant but not waterproof. Even patio furniture that is waterproof may lose its water-repelling qualities over time. To maintain your investment, fabric patio furniture should be waterproofed after cleaning or seasonally (in the spring and again in the fall, before it is stored for the winter). Not all waterproofing formulas are equal. For best results, choose a product that specifies it is for use on outdoor fabrics. And check the furniture manufacturer's instructions; using some products may harm the fabric and void your warranty, if you have one.
Water-Resistant Watch Quick Facts
Many people want a timepiece that is waterproof. A watch cannot be completely waterproof because it is made of many different parts, but a water-resistant watch is a great investment, and many can be worn while swimming, showering, and even diving. These sport watches and dive watches are available in a range of styles, for men and for women. Consider these facts when shopping for a water-resistant watch.
Tips on Caring for Your Patio Set
Keep your deck or patio looking fresh each year by caring for your patio set. Whether you need to protect your iron patio set from rust or waterproof a teak patio set so it doesn't warp in the rain or snow, these tips will help you keep your patio furniture looking like new.

What to Pack for Africa's Highest Peak
Imagine that you are planning a trip that will take you from the equator to Antarctica in seven days. Now imagine that you have to limit the amount of gear you pack to 35 pounds or less. The task is getting more complicated. What kind of luggage would you choose and how would you pack for a trip that encompasses such extreme changes in climate and altitude? When Erica Davis, a paraplegic athlete, and Tara Butcher, a physically challenged athlete, climb Africa's highest peak, they will have to answer exactly those questions. The challenge: Mount Kilimanjaro rises from nearly sea level all the way up to 19,330 feet. The trail climbs from the hot bushland through rain forest, moorland, alpine desert and arctic glaciers up to the rocky Uhuru peak. A climb like Mt. Kili presents special challenges when it comes to luggage, clothing and gear. Being prepared for the weather and temperature extremes is a necessity, but it's also important not to pack too much. There is a 35-pound weight limit to each piece of luggage carried by a porter. Most climbers pack one 35-pound capacity bag to go up with a porter and one small daypack to carry up themselves. The daypack: Erica and Tara will have 7 days to summit Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro. As they pass from one ecological zone to the next, their needs will change and so will the contents of their daypacks. Each day Erica and Tara will repack their daypacks in anticipation of the specific challenges of the day's journey. In general, their daypacks will include things like water, snacks, dry clothing, waterproof gear and sunscreen. The importance of keeping clothing and gear dry cannot be overstated. When choosing a daypack, a small to medium backpack made of lightweight, moisture-resistant material that comes with a removable waterproof shell will be ideal. It's also helpful if the backpack has convenient access to a water bottle compartment or can accommodate a water bladder. Plenty of pockets, zipper compartments and hooks are also handy. What to pack: A sturdy but lightweight water-repellant duffel bag with a capacity of about 35 pounds is ideal for the trek to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The bag needs to have room for plenty of layers of breathable, moisture-wicking clothing and layers of fleece clothing, as well as a waterproof layer. To save space, it's a good idea to pack clothing that does double duty, such as pants that easily convert into shorts. Aside from clothing, the climb will also require accessories like sunglasses, hats and gloves, plus equipment like trekking poles and a headlamp, as well as toiletries like sunscreen, insect repellent and a first-aid kit. Support the Challenged Athletes Foundation: Overstock.com and the C.H.E.K Institute are co-sponsoring Erica and Tara's climb to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro in order to raise awareness for athletes with physical challenges who wish to participate and compete in sports. Portions of the proceeds will benefit the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF). CAF raises funds to give physically challenged athletes the opportunity to stay active and competitive in the sports they love. To show your support for physically challenged athletes like Erica and Tara, donate now to the Challenged Athletes Foundation for the Fit 4 Kili Climb. Best Types of Tile for Kitchen Countertops
Tile kitchen countertops are an affordable alternative to traditional solid stone units. Countertop tile can be made from many of the most popular materials, such as granite or quartz, yet costs just a fraction of the price. Tile countertops are also easy to install and repair, making them the perfect project for the DIY homeowner. Ceramic. Ceramic tile is made from natural clay that is baked to remove excess moisture. It is available in a wide variety of colors and designs that can be mixed and matched to any kitchen. Ceramic tile is affordable, easy to install and very low maintenance. It is also waterproof and able to withstand high temperatures from hot dishes. If you choose ceramic tile for your kitchen countertops, you should be aware that ceramic tile can crack or chip if heavy objects are dropped on it. To minimize grout stains, you can choose a dark grout and use a grout sealer to protect the seams from dirt. Mosaic. Mosaic tile comes in tiny 1-inch square units. It is often sold in large sheets that are attached to a mesh backer-board, making for easy and fast installation. These tiles can be mixed to create unique patterns and textures, and are very durable. One advantage of mosaic tiles is that they are colored all the way through, so a chip or crack will not be as visible as with ceramic tile. Granite. Granite tile is a natural stone product that is widely popular in kitchen decor. Tiles made from granite offer the beauty of natural stone at a fraction of the cost. Granite tiles often have a mottled surface that helps to hide dirt and fingerprints and are incredibly strong and long-lasting. Like all granite products, these tiles must be sealed after installation and at least once a year for the duration of their use. Quartz. Quartz tile is a manufactured product designed to look similar to granite while offering superior performance. It is made from crushed quartz crystals pressed together with resin. Quartz tile has a smooth and uniform surface with a consistent grain. It is slightly less expensive than granite and is much more durable and long-lasting. Unlike granite, quartz tiles do not need to be sealed. They are completely nonporous, which prevents bacteria from becoming trapped in the surface. Quartz cannot be repaired as easily as granite, however, and it offers none of the natural beauty and color variation of real stone. View All Tile Back to Guides Directory View All Tile
