I purchased this tent for a 50 mile backpacking trip in the Uinta mountains of Utah. It performed very well, with easy setup and take down and plenty of room. This 3 man tent does take a bit more room to set up because of the large vestibule areas on each side of the tent when using the rain fly. But those areas are well worth the extra room needed. I really liked having an area outside the tent to put my boots, backpack and other items that was still covered and protected from the elements. On one night we camped at the base of King's peak at 11,000 feet with the wind gusting all night long. Even the strongest gusts didn't colapse the tent. We felt very secure and other than the noise, we were not bothered by the high winds inside out tent. This tent is somewhat heavy for backpacking at 8 pounds. We split the weight between two of us and were happy to have the extra space. Three would fit fine without gear in the tent. On the last night we didn't set the rain fly so we put both our packs inside the tent and had enough room to sleep fine.Another person in our group had the 2 man version of this tent and results were the same. Good tents and solid in the wind.
Used on an early June Pioneer Handcart Trek. Through two rainstorms, two freezes and two windy nights it kept us warm, snug, and dry. It is easy to set up, very sturdy with its three pole design, rain-tight and compact. I am 6'4" and had sufficient length to comfortably stretch out, as well a plenty of room for our two Camp Rest sleeping pads. The two vestibules are roomy enough for plenty of equipment, and we loved having his and her doors. Our only complaint is that one morning, after the frozen tent began to thaw, condensation from the rainfly dripped through the screens onto our bags - but not enough to be significant and only that one time. I do recommend you get a footprint that covers the very large vestibule floor, otherwise you will need to kneel in the dirt and weeds to zip/unzip the vestibule zipper all the way, but that's a small price to pay for the excellent, dry storage it provides. One more note - one of the tie-downs on the rainfly was ripped out by someone carelessly running right next to our tent. We called Alps and their customer service is excellent and giving us several options to consider. I recommend Alps tents!
Took 5 day backpacking trip in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness in Washington State. Tent goes up and down easily even with some wind. Vestibules are huge as well as tent, which held 3 of us and our gear easily the one night it absolutely poured along with thunder and lightning. Had set the tent in a low spot at the bottom of a hill and tent held even with about 2 inches of standing water beneath the tent! Only issue was a small leak on one of the vestibule zippers and a leaky corner that was because I did not use the guy rope that night, lesson learned! Only minor issues are zippers are very far away on vestibules when they are closed and the accessory pocket is pretty small. Other than that, very satisfied and now looking at other Alps Mountaineering gear to purchase!
I used this tent a week ago for a backpacking trip. It was quite cold and extremely windy (up to 50 MPH gusts) during the night. The tent kept us warm and snug and was very stable even with the strongest of gusts. Since it did not rain I cannot give any comment on how well it would do with rain and the wind. I just thank my lucky stars I did not have to find out! The alcoves are very large on this tent and made it easy to keep gear such as boots and packs under shelter while not taking up room iin the tent. Not having to climb over each other in order to enter or exit the tent is especially welcome for the midnight nature calls required when drinking too much coffee before bed! I would recommend this tent to anyone wanting a sturdy tent that is very good at fitting two grown men.
This tent is awesome, I bought it because my wife and I are getting into backpacking. We both have done a lot of backpacking as kids with our families and we knew what kind of tent we wanted. This one is roomy enough, it breaths, and it has a good rain fly with a big enough vestibule for our dog to sleep in. This was an amazing deal. I was looking at Mountain Hardware which was almost $400, and also Columbia tents, but this one is probably just as good as those and the price was way better. We're excited to have this tent.
I gave this 4, instead of 5 stars, only because I did no comparisons with any other contemporary tent - just went by the on-line reviews and ratings. I suspect my out-look will only improve as I compare it with other newer models. A 10 year old could set this up (without instruction), and that was a problem for me because the only real criticism I had was that the intructions were not concise - and I am one of "those" who like operating with precise written instructions, rather than pictograms. I would recommend this tent overall because it can be used in a wider variety of situations than other tents - i.e. smaller footprint & lighter weight for backpacking, canoeing, rugged exploration but big enough for kids to stand up in and great for state or nat. park family camping too.
Very nice tent, especially considering the price paid. Exactly as expected and received within just a couple of days after ordering.
We used the tent for 2 weeks of primitive camping in North Cascades. It was never damp, always dry inside. Though it didn't rain hard, some drizzles had no effect on the tent. Very easy to set up. Used tarp underneath the tent. Spacious enough for 3 grown-ups, though we used it for 2 and gear. Happy with the purchase.
very useful; great size and weight. Very pleased with my purchase.
Took this tent out for its maiden voyage during a Nor'easter. About an inch of rain the first night with wind gusts in the 25-30 mph range. The tent stayed completely dry. Comfortable size for 1-2 campers. Three aluminum pole design is fairly lightweight yet strong. Two large doors: easy to get in and out. Great ventilation: fly opens on both sides of tent. Also, small vents on both ends. Great value for a three aluminum pole tent. Couple of very minor issues: 1. A little hard to reach the zipper pull on the fly from inside the tent due to the depth of the vestibules. 2. Large footprint for a 3 person tent (again due to size of vestibules). 3. Gear loft is tiny (like 12x12)
