I want to put a tray/plastic/rubber mat on the inside bottom of this. I will be using this inside for a cat and want to make it easy to clean. What are the measurements of the portion that actually touch the ground?

This is the second of this kind of small, made-in-China wooden coops I've bought, and they work for specific purposes if you don't expect too much and take some extra steps during assembly. I got one when I needed more space quickly so I could go on a trip and leave my girls in their coops 24/7 while I was gone, and couldn't afford a sturdier one. I've it for a full year and fully expect to get another couple out of it. This one I bought for my second and third broody hens (the first is already in my small nursery coop with her chicks) in order to free up the nesting boxes they are hogging. Because of repairs I've had to make to the first one, before assembling this coop I checked everything for damage and repaired the two cracks I found. I reinforced all parts that were simply glued or stapled together with screws and used a power stapler to fasten all screens to their frames, since they are only attached with tiny staples that soon pull out. I cut replacement floors out of plywood using the flimsy hollow originals as patterns. The plastic slide-out tray is much too light and will break under full size hens, so I also made a floor for the tray out of plywood and will use the plastic for something else. I replaced all the flimsy hinges with standard utility hinges and added some extras to the roof edge. Before assembly I painted everything with Thompson's Water Seal. I had to drill some pilot holes for the screws because the manufacturer did so haphazardly and this wood WILL split if you don't. Finally, in order to make it easy to move without straining and cracking the rather light frame, I bolted pressure treated 8 foot 2 X 2's to the top edges of the long sides of the frame, just under the roof, leaving the same amount extending from each end so two people can carry it like a sedan chair. These carrying arms will also give you someplace besides the roof to put weights to hold it down so raccoons won't lift it up and kill your chickens. Lots of extra work, but it really is adorable and will do what I need it to do.Read More
I am new at this backyard chicken business but I'm definitely glad I bought this coup for my two hens. It was easy to put together with two people. My girls had to be taught how to roost at first but they seem very happy! I let them roam the yard during the day, but at dusk they tuck themselves inside for the night so they must really like it!Read More
This is well made and went together easily. Great value.Read More
I paid $215 for this coop with attached run. Parts came broken and customer service was very nice about sending replacements on the phone, but sonce they don't stock parts, they sent a brand new coop. In the second coop, the same part was broken, the drawer that the plastic tray sits in. In the first coop, the plastic was broken, but loose, so I could have just changed out the liner, but the second liner was glued into a drawer that was broken on the front piece making the swap impossible. The first coop's back wall to the nest box was broken at the top and the latch part on that piece was where the wood was all splintered and the latch part only 1/2 screwed in, so whoever was building it in the factory knew it was broken and boxed it up and sent it off. The second coop was better at parts lining up than the first, but this is not suitable for your chickens as it is so flimsey. The wood seems to be balsa wood. These were all very noticable factory rejects and yet the company, TRIXIE, boxed them up and sent them off. Neither coop would protect the chickens during the winter as the windows are only mesh covered with no way to close it off. Do not get a Trixie coop. There are other brands that cost a bit more but this was a waste of money and I don't want a third coop delivered .Read More
I decided I wanted to have chickens and then I ordered this adorable little chicken condo because of the fabulous price and free shipping. I knew I was in trouble when I saw the size of the boxes that arrived. As I (finally) read the small print I realized the coop was designed for 2 regular, or 4 small chickens. My mistake. I ordered 25 chickens!!! The wood was a little flimsy but with the price I think it is a good value, and fairly easy to assemble with two people.Read More
