    This bark control actually does work quite well. I discovered, after a call to the company, that it does not respond well to high pitched barks. I have tiny dogs, so that's too bad for me. Luckily it has a button on top that allows you to manually have it make a correction. To me it sounds like very soft static but my chihuahua and yorkie respond by crouching down and looking up with a startled expression. It really does inhibit their barking after that.

    I live in a coop apartment with a strict pet policy, when my dog was about 5 months old, he developed separation anxiety when left alone for any period of time (and these were never long periods of time -- a few hours, tops). Because he never barked when I was with him, I was unable to deal with the behavior in the direct manner I used when training him not to jump up, when to sit, stay, etc. I tried everything -- we worked with a trainer for 6 months. She gave me homework to do with him that I did diligently. I tried desensitization therapy -- leaving for short periods of time (a minute, then 5, etc. and rewarding when he didn't bark). I set up activities for him to do when he was left alone -- treasure hunts, stuffed frozen kongs to work on, puzzle toys. I bought the soothing music pet cd (which was actually very effective -- I still turn it on when I leave him alone). I tried DAP (dog appeasing pheromone) collars and DAP diffusers (you plug them in and they dispense the calming pheromone -- the same one mother dogs emit to calm their newborn pups). I tried a citronella collar, which would spray citronella -- a scent that is supposed to be extremely unpleasant for dogs -- when it registered a bark. I routinely took him out for lengthy walks or runs or to playgroups right before leaving him along so that he would be tired out and hopefully too tired to get anxious and bark. I tried herbal calming supplements and finally a prescription from the vet - clomacalm, I think? -- and nothing worked. The only option I never tried was a shock collar, because it's not something I am or was comfortable with. Finally, after nine months of one strategy after the next failing to work, a friend gave me one of these and suggested I give it a try. It is not harmful; it emits an unpleasant sound that only the dog can hear -- I imagine it's similar to the way a fire alarm going off sounds to me -- unpleasant, not painful, but unpleasant enough that it goads me to immediate action to make it subside. The first day I turned it on and left the apartment I was so nervous. I asked my neighbor to let me know if they heard any barking during the time I was gone. and they told me that they heard a couple of barks in the first 10 minutes, and then after that, nothing. at all. the entire time I was gone. All dogs are different -- mine, for example, clearly didn't really mind the scent of citronella, at least not enough to get him to stop barking. but given the price of this, if you are looking for a solution to your dog's excessive barking, I cannot recommend this highly enough. you do need to read the product information carefully so that you know the range -- if your dog roams through a larger area or one in which there are obstacles like doors or walls, you may need more than one of these. But for me, this was everything I needed it to be and more. I've since lent mine to a number of friends struggling with the same issue, and they've all had equally positive results.

    Since we have 2 yappers,this doesnt phase the older one,who is almost 10..:( The younger one,shakes his head..and no barking.. I dont have it on a lot,since not fair for the one that barks less... However,I do think it would be fine as a training tool for younger dogs. Not sure if it will work well on with an older dog,who has barked all their life..which,in my experience,is the smaller breeds..mine are poms..enough said..:)

    I have 3 Pekingese (small dogs) who bark every time the door opens. It now keeps my older dog from barking at all, keeps the barking to a minimum with my female, but doesn't do a thing for my younger male. Unfortunately, he has always been the loudest so I am very disappointed.
