This is the largest step on stainless steel trash can I could find that would look good in a kitchen. The stainless steel is thick, non-magnetic, and the plastic components on the lid, step and opening mechanism are thick plastic. Ideally, I would have liked to have seen the pedal and moving parts in stainless steel--especially at this price point. The top of the can seals very well, thus to avoid getting a whiff of nasty odors when you open it, put a stickup on under the lid or a car freshener. The can sits on a textured tile floor in our kitchen and tens to move backward when you step on to open. Thus we have it backed up to a cabinet. But you have to have a spacer since the lid just slids under the countertop and can imbed opening the lid since it will hit the lip of the countertop. I wish they would have made the bottom of a non-skid material. If you plan to put up against a wall you will need to have a spacer so lid does not rub up against the wall when it opens. Some have suggested putting bricks or weights in bottom to keep it from moving as well. When you insert the trash bag there are two half circle rings that lift up and then you pull up the bag up the center and over them and push them down to lock in the bag. This hides the bag from outside and keeps the flaps clean to tie later. The challenge is they hold the bag very well, and it makes it awkward to release them to pull the bag out. So far I just pull on the bag to get them to release, but sometimes the bag will tear where I pull. I use a Costco Kirkland 45 gallon bag which has tie handles and that fits well for this can. I would like to see a way to put your fingers under the rim and have a mechanism that pushes up the bar to release it. Overall, it is a great can. It will be interesting to see how durable the plastic parts are. I learned of the Can when I saw it in use at DFW airport in the AA boarding bridges as you get on the plane. Seems to have held up well there. As for price, you can get this Can in all plastic for under ***, however that seems high for plastic. I wish they had it under *** in this configuration and with stainless steel moving parts. The only reason I paid the high price for this unit was the looks and I got tired of my hours smelling like a kitchen trash can since the other one was a open lid and we needed a large can for our large family. This one seals it and my olfactory glands are happy campers now, so it was worth it.
This is a great trash can for a big family.... don't get me wrong it is BIG, but perfect the the amount of waste that kids make. The lid closes very slow so finger don't get caught and it seals so no odors escape... the stainless steel exterior blends perfect into my modern kitchen.
- How accurate was the sizing? Very Accurate
